oger Federer has pulled out of events in Toronto and Cincinnati this month, raising doubts about his participation in the US Open.
Federer underwent double surgery on his knee but returned to action in March. He pulled out of the fourth round of the French Open to focus on Wimbledon where he was defeated in the quarter-finals.
He had already pulled out of playing at the Olympics after explaining that “during the grasscourt season, I unfortunately experienced a setback with my knee”.
And Federer overnight pulled out of the National Bank Open in Toronto and the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati because of the ongoing knee issue.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion has played just 20 times this season and there are now major question marks about him playing the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year having pulled out of his two main warm-up events.
The US Open, an event Federer has won five times but not since 2008, gets under way on August 30.
He last competed at Flushing Meadows back in 2019 after missing last year’s event in New York because of his same knee problems.
