The Rock reveals the key behind his motivation

Roman Reigns says he has the “upper hand” ahead of his mouth watering Universal Championship match with Brock Lesnar at WWE Crown Jewel.

The ‘Head of the Table’ and the ‘Beast Incarnate’ will go head to head for the first time since SummerSlam 2018 in the main event of the pay-per-view emanating from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia tonight.

The 35-year-old’s dominant title reign has lasted over a year and has defeated some huge names during that time.

But the momentous challenge of defeating Lesnar, who will compete in his first WWE match since April 2020, may prove to be Reigns’ toughest challenge yet, but he remains confident about his chances.

When asked what fans can expect from the latest chapter in the intense and physical rivalry, Reigns told WWE UK: “What makes people excited when they see a couple of alphas facing off is the measure of destruction, physicality, intensity and that level of energy we bring to table.

“I think the most obvious thing is how the roles have reversed and how the whole dynamic has shifted one-eighty.

“The direction of where each personality has been, and where it is going, all the way through to the alliance of Paul Heyman – everything has changed with me and Brock.”

He added: “But one thing that hasn’t is our physicality in the ring. Brock has done well against me years ago, but anything recently I think I have had the upper hand – and that upper hand lies with me in so many ways.”

This is not the first time the pair have clashed in the Middle East, with Lesnar retaining the Universal title at the 2018 Greatest Royal Rumble event in a steel cage.

The match did not end without controversy however, as Reigns performed a spear through the cage wall on the former UFC heavyweight champion.

Despite Reigns touching the floor first, the referee awarded the win to Lesnar, thereby retaining the title, which still irks the current champ and called it “one of the biggest screw jobs in the history of WWE.”

“I feel like I was robbed of the victory on that night. The object was to get out of the steel cage, and I feel like I did all the work to get both of us out – and not only that if we were to review the tape and I had a Special Counsel, a Paul Heyman in my corner, we could have gone back to the replays and took a better look at it,” Reigns added.

“This is another moment that justifies my reasoning for working with someone like Paul Heyman to make sure some of these robberies never happen to me in my career again.”

Speaking of Paul Heyman, the manager, who was once in the corner of Lesnar, has been offering advice to Reigns since the 2015 Royal Rumble winner’s return in August 2020.

The majority of the build up to their Crown Jewel has been focused on where exactly Heyman’s allegiance lies.

Lesnar has been doing his utmost to plant seeds of donut in his opponent’s mind regarding Heyman’s loyalty, suggesting they are still in regular contact, which the legendary manager denies.

Reigns spoke about how much easier Heyman has made his life as a WWE superstar and is fully focused on defeating his arch nemesis at the Mohammed Abdu Arena.

“Paul Heyman has a very wide skillset, and there is a lot of great behind-the-scenes details he can keep in check. A lot of people don’t get to see the little things he does for a performer, so for me that is something that is now in place and it is something Brock is lacking,” the grappler continued.

“There are so many responsibilities and tasks I don’t have to worry about now, the only thing I have to focus on is the battle plan. Paul has everything else covered. That’s not the same for Brock anymore, everything falls on him.”

The pay-per-view will also feature Seth Rollins vs Edge Hell in a Cell match, Big E’s WWE title defence against Drew McIntyre and Becky Lynch triple threat match with Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks for her SmackDown Women’s Championship.

Fans can watch WWE Crown Jewel on BT Sport Box Office or the WWE Network tomorrow from 5pm.

The show is also available in selected Vue and Showcase cinemas across the country.
