Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has been warned that his job could be at stake if he passes up the opportunity to sign Sergio Aguero.
After ten glory-filled years at the Etihad, the Manchester City striker will leave the club this summer when his current contract comes to an end.
The news has led to much speculation as to where the 32-year-old will end up next, with a number of clubs across Europe linked with his signature.
Among those teams are Spanish giants Barcelona and the club’s former star Rivaldo, believes the move would be perfect for all parties.
“Signing Aguero on a free transfer could be a coup for Barcelona,” the Brazilian told Betfair. “He has a good relationship with Lionel Messi and, with Barca missing Luis Suárez this season, Aguero would probably go straight into the starting 11.
“His arrival could also help new club president Joan Laporta persuade Messi to stay at the club.”
Barcelona are currently going through something of a transitional period, with Koeman potentially looking at a major rebuild of his squad.
As such, the Dutchman is said to be looking for players who will be at the club for the long-term rather than an ageing Aguero, regardless of his talent.
Rivaldo, who played at the Nou Camp for five years between 1997 and 2002, says the Dutchman ought to reconsider the striker as an option to help with his ambitions.
“Apparently, Ronald Koeman disagrees with a potential move to sign Aguero because he is more focused on renewing Barça’s squad by signing younger players,” he added. “But this would be a great opportunity to reinforce the attack without spending too much money.
“Koeman should remember he only has one year left on his contract, so if he doesn’t win titles between now and the end of next season, it’s probably he won’t have time to complete his project.”
Barca have been strongly linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund goal Erling Haaland and Lyon’s Memphis Depay as a attacking options, however, with the club finances reportedly unstable, Rivaldo thinks a free transfer is in Koeman’s best interest.
“Memphis Depay and possibly Erling Haaland are said to be in conversations with the club. But those players will cost big fees, so Koeman should carefully weigh up the options before rejecting them, especially when we are talking about a player of Kun Aguero’s quality.”
