Rooney sends “pressure” message to Man Utd after £73m Sancho transfer

Old Trafford legend Wayne Rooney declares there is “a lot of pressure” on Manchester United to deliver this season after the club sanctioned a big-money move for Jadon Sancho.

The Red Devils agreed a £73million deal to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and the winger is expected to be unveiled soon having undergone a medical.

United are also closing in on Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, with a fee of £43million mooted for the French World Cup winner.

Rooney claims the weight of expectation on his former club only grows with each signing and urged Solskjaer to bring an end to their four-year trophy drought.

Rooney claims the pressure is on United to deliver trophies

“I think there will be a lot of pressure, which there should be with Manchester United,” United’s record goalscorer told Sky Sports .

“Sancho coming in, they are rumoured to be in for a few more players. They are in a period now where the fans will be wanting success, silverware, and Ole and his coaching staff will be under pressure to deliver that.

“[Manchester] City, Chelsea the Champions League winners, Liverpool, there are some very good teams, but you can see with Manchester United they are getting gradually better.

“I think they will be in a place where they really will challenge next season.”

The Red Devils’ last taste of silverware came in 2017 when Jose Mourinho led them to a double of the EFL Cup and Europa League.

Solskjaer came agonisingly close to ending the club’s uncharacteristic wait for a trophy last season, but United were defeated on penalties by Villarreal in the Europa League final.

Sancho, meanwhile, won the DFB-Pokal with Dortmund during a phenomenal season in which he scored 16 goals and registered 20 assists.

Rooney – whose Derby County side were beaten 2-1 in a friendly by United on Sunday – is especially impressed by the 21-year-old’s ability to be directly involved in goals and praised Old Trafford chiefs for their shrewd business.

The former England striker added: “He (Sancho) scores goals, creates goals, so I think it’s a very good signing.”

Rooney’s glowing verdict on Sancho is shared by his former manager and fellow United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

The iconic former manager discussed Sancho ahead of England’s 0-0 draw with Scotland in the group stage of Euro 2020.

“I think a lot of Jadon Sancho, with his one-on-one duels, as an assister and scorer, he is extremely dangerous,” he told Bild .

“He has so much potential, he helps the team. That’s why he’ll be valuable to England over the course of the tournament.”
