Thomas Tuchel previews Burnley clash

Chelsea supporters endured a frustrating day at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, as they saw their team held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley.

After an early goal from Kai Havertz, the Blues appeared to be on their way to three points and a five-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

However, Matej Vydra was able to level for the Clarets and Thomas Tuchel’s men could not find a breakthrough in the final stages of the game.

With no Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku available due to injury, the Blues lacked some ruthlessness in the final third. And performances like this will no doubt lead to transfer speculation surrounding Chelsea in the coming days.

Tuchel issues Barkley challenge

One player who many expected to leave the Blues mid-season was Ross Barkley, although he was handed a shock start against Burnley.

The midfielder had a mixed game and missed a big chance before he was substituted. It was the first time Barkley has started for Chelsea in the Premier League this season.

With the January window looming, Tuchel was asked whether his efforts against Burnley can lead to more minutes, per Football London.

“It depends on himself, first of all, and it is ongoing,” he said. “If he stays positive and hard-working and at the same time I am happy if he is not fully happy. I am happy if he is not satisfied with what he has.

“At the same time, it is necessary that he appreciates where he is right now and his hard work and effort and he was very serious from the first day in pre-season, but there is a lot of competition going on in his position.”

Newcastle linked with Hazard

According to Sport (h/t Sport Witness), Newcastle United want to sign Chelsea legend Eden Hazard in January.

The mercurial Belgian was one of the best players in the world when he joined Los Blancos in the summer of 2019, but his time with he club has been punctured by consistent injury issues.

As a result, he has been linked with a move away – Chelsea have been tentatively linked with a possible reunion – and following their takeover by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, Newcastle are expected to splash the cash.

It’s said Hazard is the “main target” for the Magpies, with the club looking for a “galactic” acquisition to help them pull clear of the relegation zone.

Chalobah form could alter transfer plans

Tuchel has admitted that the impressive form of centre-back Trevor Chalobah could alter the club’s plans in the transfer market.

Chelsea were linked with a move for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde in the summer, although the deal didn’t come off in the end.

That has resulted in more opportunities for the academy graduate and although Chalobah still clearly has plenty to learn at the top level, he’s not looked out of place in the European champions’ squad.

“So you cannot say what we tried in the summer did not happen so we will try again for sure in the winter,” said Tuchel, per the Evening Standard.

“Sometimes it is like this if we see the same need, but clearly Trevoh is now here with us and he deserves to be here with us. It had nothing to do with if we can sign another central defender or not. But he stepped up. The responsibility was even more on his shoulders and he can handle it so far in a very impressive way.”
