Europe have it all to do on day two of the Ryder Cup after the United States opened up a 6-2 lead going into the weekend at Whistling Straits.
On a chastening opening day for Europe, the US dominated and won both Friday sessions 3-1 to leave Europe with a mountain to climb.
“No doubt it was a tough day,” said Europe captain Padraig Harrington. “It isn’t a good start, but there’s still 20 points to play for.”
The Americans went into the 43rd Ryder Cup as overwhelming favourites and played like overwhelming favourites on Friday.
Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia were the only pair to win a point for Europe and Rory McIlroy lost both his matches and has been left out of the Saturday foursomes session.
Lee Westwood and Matthew Fitzpatrick are back out together, while European rookies Viktor Hovland and Bernd Wiesberger are paired together. Spanish pair Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia reunite after earning Europe’s only win on Friday.
US captain Steve Stricker sticks with the same four pairings he put out on day one.
