Salah’s advice to Elliott as Liverpool youngster sets new challenge

Mohamed Salah has been handing out dietary advice to Liverpool team-mate Harvey Elliott during pre-season, Pep Lijnders has revealed .

The Reds youngster spent last season away at Blackburn but has now returned with eyes on a first team spot.

Elliott was hugely impressive at Ewood Park last term but faces a tough task in leading ahead of his attacking colleagues in the pecking order.

Salah has been Liverpool’s top goalscorer in each of his four years at the club.

And the Egyptian star is looking to pass on his wisdom to Elliott, who at 18 is still very much learning his way.

“They were sitting together in the dining area,” Lijnders said, speaking from the club’s pre-season training camp in Austria.

“Harvey had some bread and some fruit on his plate, and Mo asked him how many slices of bread he’d already had that day. Harvey said one and Mo told him to only eat the fruit!

“Harvey told me, ‘I’m always learning from these guys!’”

Elliott will have to battle with the likes of Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota for a starting role.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the only youth product to truly establish himself under Jurgen Klopp.

Nevertheless the former Fulham man is up for the challenge and is relishing the year ahead.

“It’s not going to come around and be given to me,” Elliott said recently. “I need to work hard for it.

“It’s down to me; I need to show the people I am ready, I need to show the gaffer I am ready, but I am certain I can do it. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

The teenager was played in a midfield role by Jurgen Klopp during a recent pre-season outing.

“I don’t think Harvey had ever played that position for us, but he looked good,” said the German.

Klopp also commented earlier this summer on how impressive Elliott has looked upon his return to Anfield and was keen to see him progress further.

“Harvey made a step, I have to say. He looks in a proper shape, really, really fit,” he said. “He came back in a good shape and is here now in full training obviously.

“You can see last year really worked well for him. Now let’s make the next steps together.”
