Liverpool’s record 5-0 win at Man Utd: Solskjaer at ‘rock bottom’

Paul Scholes has blasted Paul Pogba and claimed his dismissal against Liverpool should be his last moment in a Manchester United shirt.

Pogba looked set to avoid the harshest United criticism as he sat on the bench as Jurgen Klopp’s side ran riot during the opening 45 minutes.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to start Fred and Scott McTominay in front of the back-four, but they were swept aside in a devastating first-half performance.

Naby Keita opened the scoring after just five minutes, before Diogo Jota doubled the lead less than ten minutes later.

It then went from bad to worse for the Red Devils as Mohamed Salah scored twice to give them a 4-0 lead at half time.

Solskjaer then turned to Pogba in a desperate attempt to regain some respectability, but the World Cup winner only added further embarrassment.

Just 15 minutes into the second half, Pogba was sent off by referee Anthony Taylor after he consulted VAR following a robust challenge on Keita.

Pogba appeared bemused following the decision, appearing to smile, with fans on social media ripping into the former Juventus star.

And Scholes has now offered a similarly scathing review, claiming he has “caused mayhem” since his return to the club in 2016.

His future has been the source of constant speculation in recent times and with his contract set to expire at the end of the season with Scholes believing he is holding is the club to ransom.

“Paul Pogba coming on to the pitch at half-time to try to help the team and maybe get a little respectability, tries to stand on the ball, tries to show how strong he is in the middle of the pitch… gives the goal away,” Scholes told Premier League Productions.

Should Manchester United hand Paul Pogba a new contract? Have your say here

“Then later on gets sent off with a ridiculous tackle, now you’re 5-0 down with 10 men. You’d have to think, if Ole’s still a manager there, will we see Pogba again in a United shirt?

“He’s caused mayhem over the last couple of years. Everyone knows what a talent he is, everybody trusts him, every manager trusts him, tried to give him his head and let him be the player he’s been.

“But with all the commotion, not signing his contract, almost holding the club to ransom, and then he comes on and does something like that.

“It’s not Ole’s fault, don’t get me wrong, but that’s part of it that almost summed the United performance up today.”

Scholes added: “Look, he probably will play [again] won’t he? But I don’t think they will be missing anything if he doesn’t.

“He’s had numerous chances, he keeps saying he lacks consistency, but that is just [a lack of] discipline and disrespect for your manager and your teammates, what he’s done today.”
