Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn haunted by Cristiano Ronaldo tweet from 2011
Angus Gunn’s past social media activity appears to have come back to bite him following Scotland’s Nations League defeat to Portugal.
The Tartan Army suffered heartbreak as Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a 88th-minute winner to secure a 2-1 win, and unknowingly proved the Scotland stopper wrong in the process.
Ronaldo completed a dramatic turnaround for his national side after coming off the bench at half time to score a staggering 901st career goal when he turned in Nuno Mendes’ fierce cross.
And while Gunn was unable to do anything to prevent the devastating late blow, this did not stop fans online from digging up an old tweet of his about the Portuguese icon which he may have lived to regret.
In a now-deleted post from December 2011, a 15-year-old Gunn wrote on X: “Ronaldo has been very poor.”
He followed this up with the hashtag: ‘not what he was’.
A screenshot of the poorly-aged tweet was quickly pounced upon by fans and has been deleted from his account.
The message was posted on the day that Real Madrid lost 3-1 to Barcelona at the Bernabeu.
In 2011, Ronaldo was 26-years-old and arguably at the peak of his powers, having been awarded the European Golden Shoe after netting 40 LaLiga goals for Real Madrid in the 2010/11 campaign.
Given everything he has since gone on to achieve since the ill-fated post, it is fair to say that Ronaldo has more than proven Gunn wrong here.
With just one Ballon d’Or to his name at the time the tweet was published, the Al Nassr star has since won a further four of the ultimate individual accolade to his huge trophy collection.
He has also added four more Champions League titles to his one previous victory in 2008 with Manchester United, as well as tasting international success with Euro 2016 glory with Portugal.

Now the leading goalscorer of all time, the 39-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down, and hit the incredible 900-goal mark for his career in Portugal’s previous game, a 2-1 win over Croatia.
Meanwhile for Gunn, the online attention which followed Scotland‘s defeat will not be the only disappointment on his mind.
After Steve Clarke’s side took an early lead through Scott McTominay on seven minutes, the Canaries stopper did not cover himself in glory when he failed to keep out Bruno Fernandes‘ equaliser.
Gunn palmed the Man United skipper’s left-footed shot from 20 yards out into the net, turning the game on it’s head.
He managed to redeem himself with a fine double-save to deny substitute Joao Felix late on as Ronaldo rattled the post twice in the final ten minutes.
Ultimately however, it was the Portugal skipper who had the last laugh, as he finally put pay to his team’s endless pressure with the telling touch in the dying moments.
Meanwhile Gunn will surely be left regretting his activity online all those years ago.
