Serena Williams recovers vs Potapova to seal Australian Open progress

The 23-time Grand Slam champion had to recover from 5-3 down and come through an opening set tiebreak for a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Anastasia Potapova.

Afterwards, Williams said: “It was good to get through that match. The first set was extremely tight. I was a little tight but it worked out and I was able to play a little more free in the second set. It’s all about surviving and playing better every round.”

Naomi Osaka’s match-up against Garbine Muguruza looks set to be the stand-out contest of the last 16 after both players picked up comfortable victories on Friday.

Osaka made light work of a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Ons Jabeur, while Muguruza, a finalist in Melbourne a year ago, overpowered Zarina Diyas 6-1, 6-1 in under an hour.

Of her win, Spaniard Muguruza said: “I feel like I took control early in the match and kept on going. So happy that it was not a three-set match and happy with being in the second week of a Grand Slam. I felt like today my tennis was there.”

For the 27-year-old, a former Wimbledon and French Open champion, it is a first career meeting against Osaka.

And Muguruza said: “I feel like we’ve never played. I don’t think we’ve played each other before. Just looking forward to a good fourth round playing the top players. I’m just expecting a good match.”
