Simeone asked to respond to Klopp ‘Criticism’

Diego Simeone was in no mood to dredge up a war of words with Jurgen Klopp ahead of Atletico Madrid hosting Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Reds head for the Spanish capital having won their opening two Champions League group stage matches, beating AC Milan 3-2 at Anfield and following that up with a dominant 5-1 victory over Porto.

Atletico’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium holds special memories for the Reds after they beat Tottenham there in the 2019 Champions League final, however they followed that up with a 1-0 loss there to Atletico in the last-16 in February 2020.

The Reds then exited the competition when they lost the second leg 3-2 to Atletico three weeks later, in what was their final match before the season was put on hold due to the coronavirus crisis.

Simeone and Klopp exchanged words after Atletico beat Liverpool

A frustrated Klopp hit out at Atletico’s tactics after the match, claiming that he couldn’t believe the way Simeone’s side had played.

“I am completely happy with the performance. It’s so difficult to play a side like this,” said Klopp back then.

“I don’t understand with the quality they have that they play this kind of football. I don’t understand that. But the winner is always right.

“When I see players like (Marcos) Llorente, Koke, Saul… they could play proper football but they stand deep in their own half and have counter-attacks.

“But they beat us so we accept that and congratulate them.”

Those words were put to Simeone as he faced the press before Tuesday’s clash, but he was in no mood to respond.

When asked by a member of the press what he would say to Klopp in defence of his side’s style of football, Simeone simply smiled and said: “Nothing.”

The Argentinean did also elaborate on the Reds’ quality, as well as that of their Premier League rivals.

Chelsea, City and Liverpool are going through a wonderful moment,” he said.

“It’s nice to see all three of them play.

“Liverpool work very well, high pressure, backlash, take advantage of the spaces.

“The return of (Virgil) van Dijk allows them to return to their defensive level. I do not expect anything other than a very intense Liverpool that we will try to harm.

“To compete against Liverpool it is clear that you have to balance in intensity. And then look for our options in the game.”
