Smith Rowe anecdote from Championship spell says a lot about Arsenal youngster

Emile Smith Rowe is beginning to cement himself as one of the breakthrough stars of the season.

The 20-year-old Arsenal midfielder returned to the club in the summer following a season-long loan in the Championship at Huddersfield Town in the 2019-20 campaign.

And despite being restricted to Europa League action initially this season Smith Rowe is now becoming a regular in Mikel Arteta’s side.

He has created three assists and scored once in his last six appearances in all competitions, and with the departure of Mesut Ozil imminent Smith Rowe could well prove to be the German’s long-term successor.

Smith Rowe certainly does not appear to lack confidence – and his former Huddersfield teammate Danny Simpson provided an example of the England U20 international’s self-assurance when he first joined the Terriers.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Simpson recalled: “I’d had a couple of days off. “When I got out on the field, he (Smith Rowe) said: ‘It is nice to see you out here’.

“I was thinking to myself: ‘Who is this cheeky little so-and-so?’ I liked that about him. He was confident. He had only been there a week.”

Simpson was clearly impressed by both Smith Rowe’s technical and mental attributes, and is delighted to see him doing so well with the Gunners.

“I am really happy for him,” he continued. “I tweeted him the other day and I spoke to him too. He is a good kid.

“He has been patient, he is getting his game time and he is showing everyone what he can do. He is only young, he is a baby, but he really believes in himself.”

It certainly appears as though the sky is the limit for Smith Rowe, and he has been instrumental in helping Arsenal turn around their poor form.

The Gunners have now won five of their last six games in all competitions – five of which Smith Rowe started in.

He will likely return to action in his side’s next Premier League game against Southampton on January 26.
