Solskjaer and Rashford preview Atalanta clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has clarified his recent Marcus Rashford comments in which he called on the Manchester United star to “prioritise” his football.

The forward scored on his return in Saturday’s defeat at Leicester following several months out injured.

It was Rashford’s first appearance of the season and comes after a year in which the United academy graduate has won the hearts of the nation.

The 23-year-old’s fight to combat child food poverty saw him engage with the Prime Minister and he has continued with his philanthropic work.

Solskjaer said last week: “You know what he has done off the pitch as well because he has done some fantastic things, and now it is time to maybe prioritise his football and focus on football.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer addressed “the elephant in the room”

Rashford’s camp were believed to be “unhappy” with the Norwegian’s comments, reports the Athletic.

The United boss and his player sat next to each other in a press conference to preview Wednesday night’s clash with Atalanta at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer was quick to address what he called “the elephant in the room” as he looked to put the issue to bed.

“We are so unbelievably proud of what Marcus has done on and off the pitch,” he said.

“You know what I said and you made a headline out of one little comment that I never intended to be the focus of what I was saying.

“I was saying it must be nice for the boy to focus on going into training and not feeling his ankle, or his shoulder or his back.

“Now he can just go and enjoy his football, and I think you all know that. So, there are no more questions on that one, or you can ask Marcus about it, but I just wanted to start with that one to get it out of the way.”

Rashford will be in contention to start for United as they aim to take charge of their Champions League group.

Solskjaer has a host of attacking options at his disposal but has been warned about finding the right formula.

The Norwegian was left seething by United’s away day showing at the weekend and Rashford opened up on the debrief.

He said: “We’ve had a conversation as a team, as we would do whether we win a game or lose a game. We know the next game is another opportunity for us to improve and that’s always the aim.

“It’s not only after defeats [that we have these conversations]. After some games when we win and we know we’ve not played well, it’s as important if not more important to have the conversation then because you want to nip it in the bud as soon as possible.”
