Man Utd 3 – 2 Atalanta: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer post-match press conference

Bruno Fernandes faces a race against time to be fit for Manchester United‘s clash with Liverpool.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted that the Portuguese midfielder could miss the Premier League match, adding that Fernandes is doing “everything he can” to recover in time.

The 27-year-old set up two goals for the Red Devils in their 3-2 Champions League victory over Atalanta on Wednesday, a game in which Solskjaer suggested took its toll on some of the squad.

“Games like Wednesday night are always going to bring knocks and bruises and we do have two or three carrying knocks from that gam,” the United boss admitted in his pre-match press conference.

“I’ll give everyone time, I hope I can pick from a fully fit squad, I might be without two or three.

“Bruno might be a doubt but he’s doing everything he can to be ready,” as Solskjaer also hinted French duo Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane could be in contention by kick-off on Sunday.

Fred also played a key part in the Red Devils’ win, but the Brazilian came off late in the game through injury.

Asked about the grafting midfielder’s fitness and his overall importance, Solskjaer replied: “Fred is a very good player, he’s a regular for Brazil, which in itself is a mark of quality.

“He’s got an exceptional personality and attitude to football, such a big smile, and at present, I can’t say if he’s gonna be fit or not but he’ll give everything he can to be there for us.

“He’s sharp, he’s nimble, he gets to players, he’s never afraid.

“The development he’s made in the last two and a half years I’ve been here has been great to watch.

“It showed when he got injured last season, six to eight-week injury and he was back the day before the Europa League final, joined the training session, strapped him up for the game.

“If I’d known before maybe I’d have played him but he would put his hand up and sacrifice himself for the team, that’s for sure.”

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger praised Fred’s impact against Atalanta, telling beIN Sport: “I would personally highlight the second half for Fred.

“Fred saved a few crosses in the box, defensively outstanding and he worked unbelievably hard in the second half.”

Wenger’s comments were certainly warranted, with the 28-year-old’s two tackles a game-high tally, while he managed to complete 80% of his passes, five of which were accurate long balls.

Solskjaer will be hoping to have him available for a game which could see his side fall seven points behind Liverpool with a defeat.

“This early you can’t talk about titles or anything, we are chasing them,” the Norwegian stated.

“Liverpool are one of the teams we are trying to catch up on, in the last four years, even though last season we were ahead of them maybe because of bad luck with injuries.

“We still know we have to improve to get up to the level of their last four years.”
