Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Man Utd will be aiming to ignite their Champions League campaign when they take on Villarreal at Old Trafford having lost their opener against Young Boys
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could become the first Manchester United boss to see his team lose their opening two Champions League matches.
The Norwegian watched on a fortnight ago as the Red Devils were undone by Young Boys in the Swiss capital.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s early strike was cancelled out before United conceded a 95th minute goal.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent-off on what was a forgettable night for the English side and already they are playing catch up.
On Wednesday night they host Villarreal, the team who beat them in last season’s Europa League final.
Defeat could leave them rooted at the bottom of the group and also make Solskjaer the first United boss to lose the opening two matches.
Sir Alex Ferguson only lost his opener once in the Champions League, a 1-0 defeat to Juventus in 1996.
They responded by beating Rapid Wien as they went on to make the semi-finals that year.
Louis van Gaal also lost the opener to PSV Eindhoven in 2015 but then saw his side beat Wolfsburg at Old Trafford.
United would exit that campaign at the group stages however.
Solskjaer’s side haven’t enjoyed the greatest preparation having lost to Aston Villa on Saturday.
Bruno Fernandes fluffed a stoppage time penalty as United fell to defeat for a third time in four games with pressure mounting on the Norwegian.
The Red Devils are also sweating on the fitness of captain Harry Maguire and left-back Luke Shaw.
After they take on Villarreal United face a double header against Italian side Atalanta.

After that they will travel to Spain before concluding their group stage campaign against Young Boys in Manchester.
Solskjaer is under pressure to deliver silverware in what is his third full season in charge.
He has been backed in the market with Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho all arriving in the summer.
Already the Carabao Cup has been crossed off their list of potential trophies following the recent defeat to West Ham.

Solskjaer also has a far from impressive record in the Champions League.
Last term he saw his side fail at the group stages having lost a winner takes all clash against RB Leipzig in Germany.
During his United tenure Solskjaer has won just four of his 11 games in Europe’s elite club competition.
PSG, Barcelona and Istanbul Başakşehir are among the teams to knock over the Norwegian’s United side.
