Solskjaer lifts lid on Pogba crunch talks after he rejects new Man Utd contract

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played down talks Paul Pogba is set to leave Manchester United after the Frenchman snubbed a new contract to remain at Old Trafford.

As revealed by Mirror Football, Pogba was offered a new bumper contract, which would have seen his £250,000-a-week wages increase by an eyewatering £100,000-a-week.

But the World Cup winner, who has just one year remaining on his current contract at Old Trafford, snubbed the offer, leaving Manchester United in the lurch.

The Red Devils are faced with a problem if they cannot convince Pogba to sign a contract extension as they could lose their record £89million signing for free in 2022.

United would be forced to sell this summer to recoup some of the money they paid for Pogba back in 2016.

Paris Saint-Germain are keen to offer Pogba an escape route and are ready to offer Man United £50million for the Frenchman.

United want at least £65million, though, and will dig their heels in to ensure they get this amount.

Solskjaer was asked for an update on the situation and claimed talks between the club and player are still ongoing.

Solskjaer said: “The talks are ongoing between Paul’s representatives and the club’s representatives.

“All that I’ve ever heard from Paul is that he is looking forward to the start of the season.

“There’s always speculation about Paul. As for the talks between the club and Paul’s representatives, I’ve not got every detail.

“There are always clubs interested in him. We’ve seen Paul at his best – and Paul knows what we feel about it.

“I’ve enjoyed my time working with him and hopefully we can work together. It’s all speculation again. Let’s see what happens.”

Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola dropped a bombshell last season when he announced on the eve of United’s Champions League defeat by RB Leipzig in December 2020 that his client is unhappy at Old Trafford and wants to leave.

Raiola suggested the Frenchman could be off as soon as January, suggesting Juventus would be a good destination for Pogba, but a transfer never came to fruition and the midfielder remained at Man United.

Solskjaer penned a new contract with United this Saturday, keeping him at the club until at least 2024.

Solskjaer said: “Everyone knows the feeling I have for this club and I am delighted to have signed this new contract. It is an exciting time for Manchester United. We have built a squad with a good balance of youth and experienced players that are hungry for success.

“I have a fantastic coaching team around me and we are all ready to take that next step on our journey. Manchester United wants to be winning the biggest and best trophies and that’s what we are all striving for.

“We have improved, both on and off the pitch, and that will continue over the coming seasons. I can’t wait to get out in front of a packed Old Trafford and get this campaign started.”
