Solskjaer provides McTominay update and reflects on missed chances

McTominay started alongside Fred in United’s engine room at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening, but was visibly struggling from an early stage with what appeared to be a stomach issue.

The Scottish international tried to battle on, but was clearly in considerable discomfort despite attempts to relieve his symptoms.

He was eventually replaced after 37 minutes by Anthony Martial.

Providing an update on McTominay after the match, United said the academy graduate was suffering from stomach cramp.

“It was his stomach, maybe the food in the hotel but whatever it was, he struggled. So we had to take him off,” manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained.

McTominay will look to recover quickly before Southampton visit Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old was one of the stars of United’s surge into title contention and has made 27 appearances across all competitions so far this term.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer was pleased with his side’s performance against Arsenal as they improved upon Wednesday’s shock home defeat by bottom club Sheffield United.

The Red Devils now sit three points behind leaders Manchester City in second place, having played a game more than their rivals.

“I think we had the bigger chances to win the game,” Solskjaer said.

“It was a decent performance, good defensively, two massive chances in the second half but unfortunately it wasn’t there to go in between the posts.

“I am pleased for the boys. Wednesday was disappointing but today we felt they did what they should be doing.”
