Solskjaer shares hotel talks with Ferguson over Europa League final selection

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has recalled talks with former boss Sir Alex Ferguson over tough selection choices for the Europa League final.

The huge match on May 26, against Unai Emery’s Villarreal, has caused Solskjaer selection headaches – especially when it comes to keepers.

David de Gea and Dean Henderson are both in good form with the latter becoming the No. 1 choice for the Reds recently.

But with De Gea getting a lot of game time from the league this season the manager is finding it difficult to choose who should start in the final.

He said: “It’s always difficult. The human side is you want everyone to have the experience of a final, but you have to pick 11, make some tough decisions and to stand by them.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a tough keeper choice to make

“We have two league games to finalise and decide what the 11 will be.

“I remember Sir Alex coming to my hotel room to explain why I didn’t play a semi-final. But I still felt I had a contribution to make.

“And all my players know they’ve had a role to play this season. We wouldn’t be able to get results this season without the whole squad’s contribution.”

And Ferguson himself spoke about the times Solskjaer was left on the bench while he was in charge of the Premier League club.

He told the BBC: “I think Ole was always very communicative. Even when he was on the bench – and he spent a lot of time on the bench!

“He would take notes of training sessions and he had a will and way forward that he wanted to be a manager.

“For a club like Manchester United, it’s a results industry. Without question. If you don’t get results, questions are going to be asked.”

Questions have been asked about Solskjaer in the past as he has not won a trophy since becoming manager in 2018.

This makes the Europa League final even more crucial for Solskjaer as it is his first final in charge of United.

He has reached four other semi-finals since January 2020 but faced heartbreak after losing each one.
