Solskjaer singles out “terrific” Greenwood after Man Utd warning

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out the “terrific” Mason Greenwood after his side’s rout of Southampton despite his goalless performance.

Manchester United stuck nine past the Saints at Old Trafford to equal their record Premier League win.

Eight different players got on the score sheet, but Greenwood was not one of them.

The teenager, hailed by many as the best finisher at the club, has not scored in the league for two months.

His strike at West Ham remains his only league goal this term, but his manager was more than impressed with Greenwood’s work.

Solskjaer said: “Mason Greenwood was terrific and his performance was top for a player who did not score a goal.

“When a game starts like [this one], it was always going to be about if you can get the first goal.”

The United manager’s praise comes after recently challenging Greenwood to reproduce the form he showed last season.

Several youngsters were afforded opportunities last year and the academy graduate took his, scoring 17 times.

This season though he has notched on just four occasions

Solskjaer has cautioned Greenwood against falling foul of “second-season syndrome” and urged the striker to come through his difficult spell.

“Everything is a test,” he said.

“We talk about the second-season syndrome and if you take your eye off the ball for a slight second the Premier League is unforgiving.

“I have always said that 99% effort is 100% failure. And of course players who ease off in training every single day a bit.

“I’m not saying this is Mason, I am saying it’s the case for every single one – it’s always a learning curve and test.”

Anthony Martial, like Greenwood, has struggled to be as prolific as he was last term scoring just seven times.

Two United players are well into double figures this term with Bruno Fernandes leading the charts with 17. Marcus Rashford is just one behind on 16.

New man Edinson Cavani has found the net on six occasions.
