Solskjaer ‘excited’ to work with new Man Utd signing Varane

Manchester United started their 2021/22 Premier League campaign in emphatic fashion as they thumped fierce rivals Leeds 5-1 at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were at their rampant best as they punished Leeds in lethal fashion, Bruno Fernandes bagging a hat-trick alongside goals from Mason Greenwood and a rare strike from Fred.

The result is the perfect start to a crucial season for the club as they look to end their four year trophy drought and launch a serious title tilt for the first time in years.

The Red Devils finished second in the league table last term, but were way off the pace set by ‘noisy neighbours’ Man City, who cruised to their third title in four seasons ending the campaign 12 points ahead of United.

Those at the top of the Old Trafford hierarchy have spent big this summer in a bid to close the gap between City and United, with long-term target Jadon Sancho finally putting pen to paper on a deal with the club to the tune of £73m.

The second marquee signing of the summer, Raphael Varane, was unveiled to the Old Trafford crowd ahead of kick-off against Leeds after sealing his move from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

With that being said, here is Mirror Sport’s Man Utd transfer round-up for Monday, August 16.

Solskjaer coy on new arrivals

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave nothing away in his post-match interview

Having already spent a combined £115m on Sancho and Varane, the Old Trafford faithful will be questioning whether they can expect any more big names before the window closes.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did very little to clarify whether that would be the case during his post-match media duties after the win over Leeds.

When pressed on whether United could still make further signings before the end of the month, Solskjaer said: “I think anything from now is a bonus. I can’t say we got to do more, but you know, you never know in football.

“We have done well in the summer [transfer] window, Raphael has come in today as well, which I think gave the crowd a boost and to the players, so you are excited of course. And there are eight or nine players there that are not here today.”

United have long been touted with a move for a new defensive midfielder, with West Ham’s Declan Rice and Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez two names often linked with a transfer to Old Trafford.

The Brazilian has struggled to impose himself on proceedings since he arrived at Old Trafford back in 2015.

With six years of United experience and at the age of 25, Pereira’s impact or lack thereof has become somewhat hard to defend, though he was the hero of pre-season with his stunning strike against Brentford in a warm-up clash.

Though he has often struggled to establish himself as a first team regular, time remains on his side and most importantly there have been flashes of a stellar player littered between lengthy spells either out of form or on the side-lines.

This is why, according to TNT Sports, Premier League side Everton are willing to take a chance on the attacking midfielder who is open to a move away from Manchester.

The report claims that Rafa Benitez’s side have offered to take the player to Goodison Park on loan for this season, with an option to make the switch permanent following the conclusion of the campaign.

Will Varane be a success at Man Utd? Have your say here.

Almost every United fan is salivating with excitement over the thought of a four-time Champions League winner in Varane partnering club captain Harry Maguire at the heart of the Red Devils defence.

However, Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson remains unconvinced by the 28-year-old World Cup winner.

He told LFC TV : I’m not sure he is [a fantastic signing].

“Have you seen how many games he’s played in the last five seasons at Real Madrid?”

The Frenchman has spent a number of games on the side-lines for Real Madrid, though the bulk of his persistent injuries came more than four years ago.

Varane has missed no more than seven league games per season at Los Blancos and his spell out of action last season was down to coronavirus as opposed to an injury.
