Solskjaer’s Van de Beek frustration overheard as Phelan enraged

With no fans at Old Trafford for Manchester United’s FA Cup clash with Liverpool, it was again possible to hear tensions running high on the touchlines.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eventually got the better of his tactical battle with Jurgen Klopp – but he was far from happy with everything he saw.

The Red Devils fell 1-0 behind after Mohamed Salah’s opener and were pegged back again when the Egyptian equalised in the second half.

Bruno Fernandes eventually came off the bench to net the winner with a fine free-kick to send United into the fifth round.

Fernandes replaced under-fire Dutchman Donny van de Beek, who failed to take his chance to impress on a rare start.

And Solskjaer was heard complaining to Van de Beek early on for killing an attack, shouting at him to “run with it” before again getting on his case during the next break in play.

Later on in the game, it was Edinson Cavani in the firing line with Mike Phelan left enraged as he gave the ball away cheaply to allow Salah to equalise in the second half.

Thankfully, Fernandes came off the bench to rescue United, with Solskjaer praising his star man for staying behind in training to practice his free-kicks before netting the winner.

“Great goal. A good free-kick,” Solskjaer told BBC.

“When you leave him out, like I had to do today, he stayed about 45 minutes after training yesterday shooting free-kicks. So I was quite confident he’d hit the target today.

“He’s never happy with me when I tell him to go inside if he’s playing the day after, so he got some practice.

Fernandes also sent a message of support to Van de Beek after the game, telling him he was a crucial part of their win despite being taken off on the hour mark.

Fernandes told MUTV: “We have a really good squad and we have options. If you look at the bench and the first XI today and the ones at home we have a really good squad, it will not be a problem if we change the team or someone is tired because we have really good players.

“Donny did a great game, playing in the position I play watching him he moves really good, he played really well. It’s important for us.

“If I was in the position of Donny I would not be happy at all but the most important is doing what he does today, coming in and helping the team.”
