Southgate draws line under Foden and Greenwood’s Iceland breach

Manchester City midfielder Foden has been recalled to the squad for this month’s games against Ireland, Belgium and Iceland, though after Southgate held discussions with his club manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Greenwood has been left out having only started four club games, in all competitions so far this season.

“They don’t come as a pair, they are individual players with their own strengths and individual talents,” said Southgate.

“Looking at the balance of the squad positionally, Phil has had a lot of football with his club most recently and Mason has had less game time with United, I’ve had a good chat with Ole about his development and I feel it is better for him to stay with the club at the moment and to develop over the next few months.

“They were both available [for selection], there is no carry over from what happened in September, that is done. Both available for selection and both are going to be very good players, there is no doubt about that so the timeline this occasion is different for them.

“They are now judged on their football, their development and how they are progressing. They are both in an area of the pitch where there is a lot of competition for places so it is a realy challenge for everyone in those places.”
