Rashid Khan’s late heroics with the bat did the job for Sussex as they edged past Yorkshire to book their spot in the Vitality Blast T20 Finals Day.

Afghanistan all-rounder Khan came to the crease for Sussex with it all to do, requiring 43 runs from 21 balls to surpass Yorkshire’s first innings total of 177-7.

And Khan, fresh off his Hundred exploits, put on an absolute show during Tuesday’s quarter-final in Durham, posting a fantastic 27 not out off just nine balls for his side to put them on the brink of glory in the T20 competition.

Khan hit a six off his second delivery before smoking another maximum in the 18th over via a ridiculous helicopter shot much to the amazement of the crowd.

Then in the 19th over, the 22-year-old struck three fours off the bowling of Yorkshire skipper David Willey, putting victory within touching distance for Sussex in Durham on Tuesday.

And with six needed in the final over, Chris Jordan notched the winning runs with a four of his own following a couple of singles to shatter Yorkshire’s T20 dreams by five wickets.

Yorkshire were bidding to reach the showpiece event for the first time since 2016 and just for the third time ever.

After the victory, Khan, who is not available on Finals Day, said: “Thanks to the coaching staff for sending me in early to finish the game. I think they bowled where I wanted. Even I don’t know [where it’s going] when I hit the ball. I just try to hit it strong.”

Khan will grab the headlines but Luke Wright had top scored for Sussex in Durham, posting 54 runs off 39 deliveries having been dropped when on 31.
