Minanino was axed from the Anfield squad by Jurgen Klopp who said he couldn’t get him enough game time.
He made nine Premier League appearances for the Champions, and 17 in all competitions this season.
But Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl says Japan star Minamino is so good getting around the pitch he can help his side several positions, including the creative No10 role.
Minamino looked sharp and hungry at Newcastle, finishing well in the first half, thanks to a superb first touch as he burst into the box.
It was the sort of punchy debut that Klopp could do with sparking up his Liverpool forward line with Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Firmino all struggling for goals.
Hasenhuttl reckons the on loan star will be key to stopping Saints run of just one win in ten games.
Hasenhuttl said: “For Taki, it’s good. It’s always good when you immediately come in and score. It was a fantastic goal.
“He showed in some other movements that he can help us in the 10 position.
“He showed he can help us, definitely.
“Che (Adams) and (Danny) Ingsy at the moment don’t score. This is a fact.
“Especially Ingsy, we are missing his goals at the moment. He’s a little bit unlucky with his finishing, either it’s offside or he hits the post like here.
“Sometimes these situations happen for strikers.
“That’s the reason why I’m very happy that Taki scored against Newcastle. He showed immediately he can help us.”
