The seventh edition of the women’s Olympic football tournament officially gets underway this morning as Great Britain kick off proceedings at the Sapporo Dome.
It is nine years since we last saw Team GB in competitive action as they reached the quarter-finals at London 2012, where their medal hopes were cruelly extinguished by two-time bronze medalists Canada.
Hege Riise’s side have only played one solitary warm-up match in the build-up to Japan after a proposed meeting with Zambia was cancelled, with Ellen White notching a brace and new Arsenal signing Nikita Parris also on target in a 3-0 win over New Zealand last week.
GB’s strong and mostly English squad are expected to be in contention for a medal this summer, though Group E poses some potential challenges in the form of hosts Japan and old foes Canada.
2018 Copa America finalists Chile, meanwhile, are making their Olympic debut following an impressive rise under coach Jose Letelier that saw them reach the World Cup for the first time in France two years ago.

10 mins – GB have the ball in the back of the net but Ellen White is denied by the offside flag!
They break well, Georgia Stanway is in space on the right and fires in a low shot. Christiane Endler gets a strong hand to it, White taps in the rebound but she was about half a yard off.
8 mins – First sign of danger from Chile, not great defending from GB as they drop deep at a set-piece, the ball falls to Maria Jose Urrutia and she toepokes wide from 18 yards.
6 mins – Caroline Weir’s teasing free-kick is close to picking out Millie Bright but the centre-half can’t quite reach it.
4 mins – Cracking move again! Lucy Bronze has space on the right, her cross almost finds Ellen White and Caroline Weir arrives on it but scuffs her shot. Promising signs already in the build-up play though as Lauren Hemp now wins a free-kick on the left wing.
3 mins – Nice and bright start from GB, Georgia Stanway seeing her low crossed ball in well claimed. Stanway playing on the right of midfield this morning.
1 min – Ellen White wins a free-kick for GB straight away. Caroline Weir floats the ball in but Chile’s star player, keeper Christiane Endler, comes out to claim with ease.
1 min – The players take the knee and we are off!
Steph Houghton goes in for the coin toss. She is sharing the captaincy with Kim Little and Sophie Ingle throughout the tournament.
How many more times will we hear that anthem in Japan over the next few weeks…?
Team GB line up in sharp white tracksuits. No fans in the stands, of course, as God save the Queen rings out.
