Thomas Tuchel takes first Chelsea training session after appointment as manager

Thomas Tuchel took his first Chelsea training session on Tuesday night after being officially confirmed as the club’s new manager.

The German coach has stepped into the Stamford Bridge hot-seat just 24 hours after the sacking of Frank Lampard.

And the 47-year-old has got straight to work preparing his side for his first fixture in charge on Wednesday night when Chelsea welcome Wolves.

Tuchel has worked with two members of his new squad previously – Christian Pulisic at Borussia Dortmund and Thiago Silva at PSG.

It is hoped his appointment will also help bring the best out of his compatriots Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, both of whom have faltered since the arrivals for big fees in the summer.

His appointment also offers a fresh opportunity to impress for a number of Chelsea’s fringe men, including defenders Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso, as well as goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The likes of Reece James and Billy Gilmour will need to earn their stripes again too having been brought into the first-team fold by Lampard.

Chelsea are currently sat mid-table in the Premier League, with Tuchel’s task now to try and secure a top four finish this season.

In his first statement following his appointment, Tuchel said: “I would like to thank Chelsea FC for their confidence in me and my staff.

“We all have the greatest respect for Frank Lampard’s work and the legacy he created at Chelsea.

“At the same time, I cannot wait to meet my new team and compete in the most exciting league in football.

“I am grateful to now be part of the Chelsea family – it feels amazing!”

Tuchel was only sacked by his former club PSG last month, having led them to a domestic treble and the Champions League final just last season.
