Tottenham complete Romero signing in £47m deal

ottenham have completed the signing of Atalanta centre-back Cristian Romero on a five-year contract until 2026.

The Serie A club exercised their option to buy the 23-year-old from Juventus for €16million on Friday before announcing his sale to Spurs in a deal worth €55m (£47m), making him the north Londoners’ second-most expensive signing ever after Tanguy Ndombele.

Romero was named Serie A defender of the season while on loan at Atalanta last term and helped Argentina to Copa America glory last month.

It is thought Lionel Messi was frustrated at Barcelona’s failure to follow up on his recommendation to sign Romero but new Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici was a major factor in convincing him to choose the Premier League club, having previously signed him for Juventus from Genoa in 2019.

Romero will be expected to instantly improve a Spurs defence which has struggled for consistency and was plagued by individual errors last season.

Spurs remain in talks to sign Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who can play at right-back or centre-half, and are expected to ramp up attempts to acquire the Japan international now that his participation in the Olympics is over and Romero has signed.

Spurs remain open to offers for Sanchez, Dier and right-back Serge Aurier, while Tanganga could go on loan before the end of the transfer window, with Turkish club Galatasaray interested.
