Tottenham in negotiations with Conte as Pochettino return off the table

Tottenham were on Wednesday night holding negotiations with former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte about becoming their new manager.

It comes after Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy appears to be finally admitting defeat in his pursuit of Mauricio Pochettino after Paris Saint Germain blocked his departure.

Conte quit Inter Milan last week with a £7m pay-off and Mirror Sport revealed then he was keen on a return to English football.

But Tottenham had other priorities with Pochettino and Conte does come with a reputation for being confrontational and demanding.

However, after missing out on Pochettino, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, the idea of being able to pull off a major coup in getting Conte would surely be popular with Tottenham fans despite his links with bitter rivals Chelsea.

Conte has a phenomenal CV having led Chelsea to the Premier League title and FA Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge but left amid rows behind the scenes over transfer targets.

Former Italy international Conte also led Inter to their first Serve A title since 2010 this season but that reign ended with the Italians facing financial meltdown and he was refusing to sell players to balance the books.

Tottenham are hoping a deal can be reached with Conte and his advisers which could also see former Juventus executive Fabio Paratici move to White Hart Lane to help oversee potential transfers.

Levy will be desperate for a big name appointment to try and help them persuade Harry Kane to stay and that could yet be a sticking point.

Levy has also insisted that he wants a new manager in place by the start of the Euros so they can plan for next season.

Their pursuit is already dragging on having missed out on previous targets and fans are getting restless after a disappointing season which finished with Jose Mourinho getting sacked in April.

That makes the idea of getting another high profile, high maintenance, highly paid and demanding manager seem a strange choice after the Mourinho fall out.

Tottenham held back when Conte initially became available but also know that he fits the bill in terms of playing attractive football and will bring energy to the role.
