Transfer news and gossip: Arsenal to close deal; Man United eye Rice

W

ith just a fortnight to go now until the transfer window opens for business once more, the rumour mill is inevitably beginning to head into overdrive.

While it has been proved time and time again that the January market is not always the best place to find value, this year the mid-season transactions seem likely to be plentiful as clubs battle to improve their depth and ensure they are sufficiently stocked for the second half of what has been a truly hectic and gruelling campaign to date.

Here are the latest transfer headlines and gossip across the Premier League, Europe and beyond…

There was disappointment for Arsenal on Thursday as Dominik Szoboszlai’s move to RB Leipzig from sister club Red Bull Salzburg was confirmed.

The highly-rated Hungarian midfielder, 20, had been heavily linked with the Gunners as a potential solution to their creative ills, but will now head to the Bundesliga on a four-and-a-half year deal in January.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom for Arsenal, with the Metro reporting that they will finally sign Hertha Berlin centre-back Omar Rekik in a £900,000 deal after he arrived in London on Thursday to complete formalities.

Elsewhere, Chelsea’s interest in England’s Declan Rice is well-documented, but now it is claimed that Manchester United could swoop for the talented West Ham star at the end of the season.

According to the Daily Express, the two giants could battle for Rice’s signature next summer if, as expected, the in-form Hammers resist interest in their key asset in January as they compete for a top-six finish under David Moyes.

Meanwhile, new West Brom manager Sam Allardyce could be set to raid former club Crystal Palace as he looks to instigate a trademark escape from relegation at The Hawthorns.

The former England boss has been tasked with helping the 19th-placed Baggies avoid the drop after being appointed as the successor to Slaven Bilic this week and the Daily Mail report that he could swoop for Palace’s James Tomkins in a bid to improve West Brom’s defensive options.

West Brom are not the only club on the lookout for defensive recruits. Liverpool have been left persistently short in that area amid an injury crisis this season, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both out for the long-term.

Plenty of names have been linked with a move to Anfield as cover for that duo, with AS Roma Live suggesting that the Reds have now joined the likes of Tottenham and Leicester in the race to land Brazilian centre-back Roger Ibanez.

The age-old Saul Niguez to Manchester United links appear to have cropped up in Spain yet again, while the The Athletic claim that Newcastle, Sheffield United and two unidentified clubs from Spain are hoping to take Marcos Rojo on loan in January.

Meanwhile, The Athletic also report that Liverpool are open to bids for Divock Origi, with Wolves said to retain their interest in the Belgian striker following the fractured skull suffered by attacking talisman Raul Jimenez last month.
