Deadline day is looming large and after a fairly quiet month things are coming to a head as Premier League clubs look to tie up some late bits of business.

The future of Tottenham star Dele Alli has been one of the big talking points all month, with former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino keen for a reunion at PSG. Jose Mourinho has been reluctant to let him go but reports today suggest the Portuguese has had a late change of heart and will now sanction a loan move.

Liverpool, meanwhile, already looked short on centre-backs at the start of the month and Joel Matip’s injury has only heightened their need, with a surprise move for New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long reportedly on the cards as a loan solution.

Arsenal look to have done their business in terms of arrivals, with Mat Ryan and Martin Odegaard coming in on loan, but the future of Ainsley Maitland-Niles is still to be determined, with Southampton seemingly leading the race for the England international.

Elsewhere, West Ham completed the signing of Manchester United star Jesse Lingard on loan last night, while Crystal Palace new boy Jean-Philippe Mateta could make his debut against Wolves this afternoon.

Liverpool interested in Mustafi

Liverpool are interested in Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi as they look to sign a centre-back before Monday’s transfer deadline, writes Simon Collings.

Mustafi is understood to be one option under consideration, with the German into the final six months of his contract at Arsenal.

No contact has been made with the Gunners yet, with Liverpool looking at a number of players before Monday’s deadline.

The 28-year-old has been attracting interest from other clubs, namely Lazio in Italy, but nothing concrete has emerged.

Mustafi has not played for Arsenal since Boxing Day and has only made three Premier League appearances this season.

Gray headed to Leverkusen?

German outlet BILD say Leicester winger Demerai Gray has agreed personal terms with German side Bayer Leverkusen.

However, the report claims the two clubs are yet to agree a deal as the Foxes haggle over a fee for the England international. That is in contrast with reports in the English press yesterday, with Sky claiming an agreement had been reached.

Rose finally on way out?

Danny Rose has become a forgotten man at Tottenham, having been loaned to Newcastle last season and now unable to get a game after being left out of the club’s Premier League and European squads.

According to TalkSport, Turkish side Trabzonspor believe they have reached an agreement to sign the England international on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Southampton leading AMN race

Ainsley Maitland-Niles appears almost certain to leave Arsenal in loan before the window closes on Monday, but it remains to be seen where he ends up.

West Brom are reportedly keen but yesterday Southampton emerged as the leading contenders and it appears the Gunners feel his development would be better served there than in a relegation scrap under Sam Allardyce.

Liverpool target Long

“Who?” I hear you ask. ESPN say that Liverpool could go down an unorthodox route in their last-gasp move for a centre-back following news of Joel Matip’s injury.

They claim that the Reds are looking at a loan move for New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long, a 28-year-old USA international who has never played outside the States, though he was linked with West Ham this time last year.

Dele gets PSG green light

The Mail are reporting that Jose Mourinho has now agreed that Dele Alli can leave Tottenham before Monday’s deadline.

Dele has been a target for Mauricio Pochettino and PSG all month but Spurs were understood to be reluctant to lose him without being able to bring in a like-for-like replacement, given concerns over squad depth should an injury crisis or Covid outbreak strike the camp.

Lingard explains West Ham loan switch

Here’s what Lingard – who will wear the no11 shirt at West Ham – had to say after completing his loan move on Friday night…

“I’m excited,” Lingard told West Ham TV. “It’s another new chapter in my life. Nothing is guaranteed but I’ve come here to work hard and help the team and bring my experience. That’s the main aim. I just want to enjoy my football and get back playing again and get my feet back on the pitch.

“There were lots of clubs involved but, for me personally, I felt this was the right move. I’ve obviously had a previous relationship with the manager as he was at Man U and I’ve played under him before, so he knows my qualities and what I can bring to the team. I know a couple of the players as well – I know Dec [Rice] very well from the England side – and I feel I can really settle in here quickly.”

He added: “It’s important that a player and manager have a good relationship. He’s got really good morals, he gets his team working hard and I’ve had a chat with him already and there are no guarantees – it’s down to me to put the work in and put the graft in, to get into the team and play well week-in, week-out.”

“I can’t wait to show [the West Ham fans] what I’ve got in store. I’m excited and I want to help the team push up the table as far as they can.”

Lingard joins West Ham on loan

Here’s the full story on Lingard’s loan move from Standard Sport’s Jack Rosser…

West Ham have completed the signing of Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard on loan until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old will not be eligible to feature against Liverpool this weekend, with his switch only confirmed after Friday’s noon registration deadline.

The Hammers will pay a £1.5million loan fee to Manchester United as well as covering the midfielder’s wages, thought to be in excess of £100,000-a-week.

Negotiations were said to be fraught and close to collapsing at one point as West Ham wrestled with whether or not to pay the loan fee required, but a deal was eventually struck.

The Irons brought forward Said Benrahma’s £25m permanent move from Brentford in order to free up a domestic loan spot for Lingard, with the Algerian signing a five-and-a-half year contract.

Lingard has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford, having made just three appearances all season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, none of them in the Premier League.

The Manchester United academy graduate has 24 senior England caps to his name and was a key part of the Three Lions’ run to the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018, but he has not featured for Gareth Southgate since the Nations League finals the following summer.

Hammers boss David Moyes knows Lingard from his time as Manchester United boss, but his only appearances under the Scot came in pre-season, before he was sent out on loan.
