Premier League clubs are now clear to crack on with any mid-season business and there will be plenty looking to strengthen their squads in the midst of one of the most competitive campaigns in years.
Manchester United have gone level on points with League leaders Liverpool. While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is happy with his squad, summer signing Amad Diallo is set to join up with the Red Devils squad, Jadon Sancho is still a target, while reports of a move for Jack Grealish won’t go away – even if the Aston Villa captain would cost £100million.
As for Arsenal, January looks to be more about Mikel Arteta cutting his squad rather than adding to it, with Mesut Ozil’s future a chief concern. Still, the Gunners have been linked with Real Madrid playmaker Isco, AS Roma defender Roger Ibanez and more – so don’t rule out anything just yet.
Arsenal’s London rivals Chelsea have the money to spend despite over £200m of summer arrivals, and AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma – available on a free this summer – could be a surprise target.
Liverpool are looking at defenders with Lille’s Sven Botman a possibility, while Jose Mourinho says any Tottenham arrivals would be a “big surprise”… but is that a smokescreen from the Spurs boss? Meanwhile, Dele Alli may be on his way to PSG with Mauricio Pochettino confirmed as their new head coach.

Atalanta want to keep Diallo on loan
An interesting update on the Amad Diallo to Manchester United saga.
According to Italian transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini told the press earlier today that the club were working on a deal to keep the teenage Ivorian winger on loan until the summer.
However, United are said to want to bring Diallo to Old Trafford this month, with the player himself also wanting to make the move.
Dele Alli heading to Paris?
So, with Pochettino in the PSG hotseat, Dele Alli will likely be one of his key targets. It is more likely that Dele would leave Tottenham on a loan deal this month, but if Jose Mourinho wants to raise funds to strengthen elsewhere, a sale could potentially be on the cards.
Done deal! Poch to PSG confirmed
It’s official – PSG have announced Mauricio Pochettino is their new coach.
Sancho back on United’s radar?
Manchester United tried and failed to land Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund last summer, with the England winger’s £108m asking price too rich for the Red Devils.
However, 90min.com reports that United are confident that they can sign Sancho for far less in 2021 – particularly after his slow start to the season. Sancho is said to still be keen on a move, while the coronavirus pandemic’s continued impact on football finances mean any potential deal could be done for a smaller figure – if not now, then in the summer.
Moyes not ruling out signings
David Moyes has not ruled out dipping into the January transfer market, but is more than happy with the way West Ham are playing after their 1-0 win at Everton.
“I think if the right things were there we would try but we are very aware there has been no money coming through the club so everyone should be aware there isn’t the money to do deals,” he said.
“We aren’t ready yet to compete with the top boys but we are putting on a good show when we are playing them. We are coming close.
“We went to Goodison and got a result, which shows how well the players are playing. I couldn’t praise the players enough, having to play their third game in six days. They have done an incredible job and the level of their fitness and professionalism to be in the best condition is a great credit to them.
“We have added to the squad and those players are contributing. If they don’t contribute they get left aside but when they are coming they are making contributions.”
Botman to Liverpool ‘confirmed’ by Fonte?
Former West Ham and Southampton defender Jose Fonte saw one centre-back partner move to the Premier League in 2020 as Gabriel left Lille for Arsenal, and another one may be heading to England as well.
Sven Botman has been linked with Liverpool given the Reds’ defensive injury woes, and Squawka posted a photo of Botman on Instagram with the message: “Fonte could be losing another centre-back partner to the Premier League soon.”
Fonte has steered into the speculation by replying: “Another one… Always happy to help.”
Another one to watch this month…
Ibanez to Arsenal update
While Mikel Arteta may be more focused on getting rid of players than signing them this month, Roger Ibanez is one player who could be on Arsenal’s wishlist.
According to Calciomercato, the 22-year-old Brazilian – who is set to complete a full move from Atalanta to AS Roma in the summer – is a target for Arteta, though Liverpool are also said to be interested along with PSG, Leicester, Tottenham and Everton.
That sort of interest could spark a summer bidding war, which would suit Atalanta – but not necessarily Arsenal.
Van de Beek kicking his heels
One Manchester United player who wouldn’t benefit from any move for Jack Grealish is Donny van de Beek, who has struggled for game time despite a hectic festive schedule. A January exit is unlikely, but you’d think the Dutch international will surely be on the move next summer if he doesn’t start getting minutes.
Grealish to Man Utd?
Jack Grealish impressed for Aston Villa at Old Trafford despite a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s words with the midfielder at full-time have sent United fans into a frenzy.
Solskjaer and Grealish were seen joking after the game, though one thing that would wipe the smile off the United manager’s face is the fact that the Villa captain is likely to cost around the £100million mark.
That price tag, and Grealish’s importance to Villa, mean a summer move after the Euros is a more likely option if the deal comes to pass – but watch this space…
Donnarumma to Chelsea?
Chelsea already have three capable goalkeepers on the books – Edouard Mendy, Kepa Azpilicueta and Willy Caballero – but they could add a fourth in Guanluigi Donnarumma, it seems.
According to multiple reports, AC Milan’s Donnarumma may be seen as an ideal signing given he is a free agent next summer. That would surely mean the end of Kepa’s Chelsea career…
