Transfer Talk! Arsenal double deal; Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool gossip

Frank Lampard has been sacked by Chelsea today, with former Borussia Dortmund and PSG coach Thomas Tuchel set to become the new head coach at Stamford Bridge.

Martin Odegaard to Arsenal is the transfer currently dominating the headlines as we head into the final stages of a relatively quiet window. The Gunners are finalising a loan switch for the Real Madrid playmaker, with Odegaard to undergo a medical in north London today.

Meanwhile, L’Equipe reports that Julian Draxler could also be on Arsenal’s radar with a surprise swap for Matteo Guendouzi also in the offing.

Elsewhere, West Ham are leading the race to Jesse Lingard with Manchester United prepared to sanction a January exit, while Liverpool are reportedly beating United and Tottenham in the battle to land 16-year-old Derby winger Kaide Gordon.

Crystal Palace are believed to be tracking Leicester’s Demarai Gray, with Sam Allardyce admitting West Brom’s interest in Eagles striker Christian Benteke.

Draxler to Arsenal?

Julian Draxler to Arsenal is one of those moves that is talked about every single window, but never actually happens – think Wesley Sneijder to Manchester United.

However, L’Equipe reports that Draxler to north London could actually happen, with PSG set to offer the Gunners a swap deal for Matteo Guendouzi. That move would in theory work for all parties, but swap deals are notoriously tricky to complete – but watch this space.

Hodgson addresses Benteke future

Roy Hodgson has denied that Crystal Palace’s deal for Jean-Philippe Mateta will spell the end of Christian Benteke’s time at Selhurst Park.

French striker Mateta arrived on loan from Mainz last week, while Benteke is out of contract at the end of the season and attracting interest in this window from West Brom.

“I’m afraid as a manager – especially with a team that hasn’t always scored enough goals, we’ve created more goals than we have converted – you can’t have too many forwards,” Hodgson said, per the South London Press. “The competition for places is going to be very, very important for us.

“[Signing Mateta] was an opportunity that came our way, a player who we have followed for a long time. Had we not taken the opportunity on the basis that we have some forwards at the club already, then he would have gone elsewhere and we would have missed out on the opportunity of using him not just for this season, but for the next season as well.”

Arteta unsure over permanent Ryan deal

Mikel Arteta is unsure at this stage if Arsenal will seek a permanent deal for Mat Ryan in the summer.

The goalkeeper joined on loan from Brighton last week and is set to remain at Emirates Stadium until the of the season.

Ryan has fallen down the pecking order on the south coast and is out of contract in June 2022.

“I don’t know, he just arrived,” Arteta said when asked about the potential for a full-time transfer.

“At the moment it’s a loan deal, he still has a contract with Brighton and we will assess it – see how he performs, how he adapts, what we need in the future. It’s still too early to decide.

“He’s a player that knows the league really well. He’s played so many games, he’s got international experience, he’s at the right age, he’s been competing regularly until December and we felt with the departure of Matt Macey [to Hibernian] we needed another keeper in the team to be more protected.

“So we looked at the market, we wanted a loan deal and we decided to go with Mat because he had the right profile for us.”

Moving away from the goings on at Chelsea for a moment, Standard Sport’s Jack Rosser and James Robson have the latest on West Ham’s pursuit of Jesse Lingard…

West Ham are interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard this month.

David Moyes is keen to add to his squad after a record-breaking first half to the Premier League season and is pushing for a deal with Lingard having been given the green light to leave Old Trafford.

Lingard has made just three appearances for Manchester United this season and played under Moyes during pre-season after the Hammers boss replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Sheffield United and West Brom are also thought to be interested in a loan but the Hammers are in pole position, though it is as yet unclear as to whether they would make a permanent offer or try for a loan themselves.

Before the Hammers can add another loan player this month, either Said Benrahma (Brentford) or Craig Dawson’s (Watford) move would have to be made permanent as no club is allowed more than two domestic loans at any one time.

West Ham are keen to invest this month following the sale of Sebastien Haller to Ajax for £20m and a striker remains their priority above Lingard, though progress is slow.

Lingard was left out of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad to face Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday and has been on the fringes for some time in Manchester.

The England international was keen on a move to Tottenham last summer, believing that former United boss Jose Mourinho was interested in bringing him to London if Dele Alli moved on.

Tuchel set for Chelsea job

Tuchel has experience of leading a dressing room full of high-profile players after his time with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in Paris, writes James Robson.

He is also a proven winner with two French titles, as well as reaching the Champions League final last season.

Max Allegri is another name who was considered by the club, while Andriy Shevchenko has been linked.

But Tuchel is the favourite to take the reins.

Allardyce confirms Benteke interest

Speaking of Crystal Palace…

West Brom manager Sam Allardyce has declared his interest in signing Christian Benteke, Jack Rosser reports.

The former Palace boss is desperate to bring in a striker this month to aid the Baggies’ battle against the drop.

Benteke has forced his way back into Roy Hodgson’s side this season but his future is in doubt following the arrival of Jean-Philippe Mateta on loan from Mainz last week.

Benteke is into the final six months of his more than £100,000-a-week deal at Selhurst Park and will become a free agent in the summer.

It is understood the Belgian has little interest in leaving Palace, who are 11 points clear of relegation, for a side in the midst of a relegation battle and where he would have to settle quickly.

Allardyce, however, says he would certainly be interested if Palace are happy to talk.

“I am not sure if Christian is available,” Allardyce said this morning. “If they came to me and said he was available….I am not sure that is the case at the moment.

“If he is available I would be interested, everybody knows I am interested in a front man.”

Crystal Palace in Gray race

It appears there are plenty of goings on Crystal Palace as we head towards the final days of the window.

After last week’s loan signing of Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, the Eagles are reportedly considering a move for Leicester winger Demarai Gray.

The Sun claim this would be as a potential replacement for Andros Townsend, who is out of contract in the summer.
