Transfer Talk! Varane, Pogba update; Kounde to Chelsea; Lautaro latest

The summer window is starting to hot up as clubs step up their efforts to sign and sell players.

The biggest splash of the window so far has seen Manchester United finally land Jadon Sancho in a deal worth £73million… until they also agreed a sensational £34m move to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, that is. Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is also a priority target with Paul Pogba is now expected to leave after rejecting a new contract, with PSG and Barcelona interested.

Chelsea also want to sign a superstar from Dortmund and are reportedly ready to bid £130m for Erling Haaland, but could turn to Robert Lewandowski as frustrations grow. The Blues have also opened talks with Sevilla over the signing of Jules Kounde after making him their top defensive target.

Tottenham’s transfer activity has stepped up a gear with Nuno Espirito Santo in charge. Danny Ings remains their priority signing while their stance on Harry Kane may have relaxed, and reports in Italy say they are interested in a shock move for Aaron Ramsey after sealing a swap deal involving Sevilla’s Bryan Gil and Erik Lamela.

Man City are once again ready to splash the cash as they target huge deals for both Kane and Jack Grealish: Villa are confident of Grealish agreeing a new contract, while Spurs may be open to selling their prized asset.

Liverpool have been linked with Saul Niguez, Youri Tielemans and Nicolo Barella as well as a deal for Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches as they look to replace Gini Wijnaldum… and potentially captain Jordan Henderson.

Pogba set for Man Utd exit

It would sum up Paul Pogba’s time at Manchester United were he to leave just as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally assembles a squad capable of matching the midfielder’s ambitions, and it looks as if the World Cup winner may be on his way this summer.

With Pogba said to have rejected a new contract, United will now look to sell him rather than lose such a marketable player for nothing next summer.

The Athletic reports PSG have opened initial discussions with Pogba, but the French club are wary that a move this summer could prove too complicated, and a free transfer summer could be more likely.

It is a delicate situation given United will want to sell this summer if there’s no chance of a new contract, but Pogba does not have to leave. Still, if United were to seal an agreement with Real Madrid – especially after seemingly mending fences by sorting a swift deal for Raphael Varane – then that could get PSG moving.

Eurosport suggests that Pogba will bide his time given this will be his key career move at the age of 28, while United will reportedly consider an offer of £45m.

Lautaro, Bellerin swap for Arsenal?

Arsenal are going down the Football Manager route and looking to make Lautaro Martinez their leading man, but it will be a tricky move.

Inter Milan are reluctant to lose such a talented forward, but Football Insider suggests that Arsenal could sweeten the deal by adding Hector Bellerin in part-exchange.

Bellerin’s future at the club has been uncertain for a while now, and such a move could suit all parties – but Lautaro will surely take some convincing to ditch Champions League football for the Gunners.

Solskjaer on Varane, Sancho boost

More from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now, who believes that signing Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho this early in the summer transfer window can give Manchester United the edge for the season – especially considering how late they have left their business in recent years.

“I think, as I’ve said before, every manager would be happy the sooner and earlier the deals are done and this year we’ve managed to get it sorted.

“I think the two we’ve got in will make a huge difference for us, both this season short-term but also long-term.

“Raphael is into his prime as a centre-back. He’s the same age as Harry (Maguire), a year older than Eric (Bailly) and a couple years older than Victor (Lindelof) so there I’ve got a fantastic group of centre-backs.

“With Jadon as well, with the young forwards we’ve got it’s exciting. As a manager you can’t ask for more backing when you’ve got these two in as early as we have.

“We’ve scrambled before towards the end of the window and now I think, I have to say, we’re in a good position. Pre-season is always difficult, though, in a championship year, never mind in the pandemic with the quarantining and isolation.

“You can see the team tonight, there’s loads of youngsters still. Everyone who has worked pre-season has done well and now they’re coming in drips and drabs.

“We haven’t got time to play catch-up so the others turning up late and don’t get a proper pre-season or are not fit when they come in, they might struggle to get into the team because today was a very good performance.”

Solskjaer: Varane is a proven winner

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking tonight about Rafael Varane after his £34m move from Real Madrid to Manchester United was agreed.

Solskjaer said: “Of course, very happy that we’ve managed to get a deal with Real Madrid. Medical should hopefully be OK. He’s a proven winner, a player we’ve followed for many years.

“First of all the club shows ambition with one of the most exciting young players in world football, then one of the most respected centre-backs.

“We have different ways of playing with Raphael. I can’t wait to get him in, hopefully we can get that sorted as soon as.”

Palace complete £14.9m Andersen signing

Crystal Palace have completed the signing of defender Joachim Andersen for a fee believed to be £14.9million plus £2.1m in add-ons.

The 25-year-old Denmark international, who spent last season on loan at Fulham and had been a target for Tottenham, has signed a five-year contract.

After joining Palace, Andersen said: “I’m extremely proud to be joining Crystal Palace and to be playing in the world’s best football league.

“The management of the club and Patrick Vieira have given me very strong assurance that they know my qualities, they believe in me and want me to play an important role in the team.

“I have a very positive impression of Patrick from the conversations I have had with him, and I have heard nothing but great things about the manager, the club and its plans for the future.”

Chelsea sign Bettinelli

Chelsea have completed the signing of goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.

The 29-year-old was a free agent after leaving Fulham and has moved to Stamford Bridge on a two-year contract.

Bettinelli will be Chelsea’s new third-choice goalkeeper behind Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

After joining Chelsea, Bettinelli said: “It’s always been a special club. I know the area very well so it’s been a dream of mine to come over to this side and it’s finally happened.

“There were some talks a few years ago when I was a bit younger and for whatever reason that didn’t come about but I’m here now.

“I’m really excited to be involved and looking forward to trying to impress and help the team as much as I can.”

Ben White’s transfer to Arsenal is “completed and confirmed – no doubt”, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

He claims paperwork has been signed and contracts have been agreed for White to join Arsenal from Brighton in a £50m deal.

It has been an ambitious summer for the Gunners in the transfer market and they look to have secured another one of their top targets.

Arsenal eye Martinez

Arsenal are tracking Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Inter Milan want to tie Martinez down to a new contract, as his current deal only has two years to run.

Arsenal have been alerted to the impasse in talks over a deal, however, and are tracking him.
