Liverpool’s record 5-0 win at Man Utd: Solskjaer at ‘rock bottom’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s selection calls are beginning to count against him with some of Manchester United’s players frustrated by his decisions.

The Red Devils boss is under huge pressure following Sunday’s 5-0 defeat at home to Liverpool, in which they trailed 4-0 at half-time.

Solskjaer claimed it was his “darkest day” with questions being asked of his long-term future at Old Trafford.

A poor run of form has highlighted United’s flaws and, currently, the Norwegian doesn’t seem to have the answers.

He stuck with the same XI that saw off Atalanta in midweek despite putting in a poor first-half showing and the Manchester Evening News claims players are now beginning to question his picks.

Jesse Lingard and Donny van de Beek continue to be overlooked

One man who continues to be overlooked is Donny van de Beek, who made a £40m move from Ajax last summer.

Opportunities were few and far between last term but this season he has been handed just five minutes in nine Premier League outings.

Despite his lack of game time the Dutchman has been impressing in training which has left some questioning why he is involved so rarely.

The constant shunning of Jesse Lingard has also raised eyebrows. Last term he rediscovered his best form whilst on loan at West Ham, scoring nine times in 16 outings.

Solskjaer has failed to hand him a single league start since his return to Old Trafford however.

Lingard has played just 55 minutes this season and bagged a crucial late winner against West Ham, but it hasn’t helped his cause.

Many feel he could blossom if he was given more chances by Solskjaer and as a result Lingard has turned down United’s offer of a new contract.

The 48-year-old appears to have his favourites at Old Trafford and he continues to stand by them despite results and performances being well below par.

United have lost their last two league games against Leicester and Liverpool.

Tottenham and City are next up domestically with a trip to Italy to face Atalanta sandwiched in the middle.

Despite the huge backlash Solskjaer is adamant he is the right man to lead the club having signed a new deal recently.

He said: “I do believe in myself, I do believe that I am getting close to what I want with the club.

“I think what we’ve done, what I’ve seen, the development, of course the results lately haven’t been good enough, it’s hands up and that brings doubt in anyone’s mind probably.”
