Bisping suffered a detached retina in his loss to Vitor Belfort and went under the knife several times for his injury, eventually retiring from MMA as a result in 2018
Former UFC champion Michael Bisping has explained how his fake eye works whilst removing it on a live video chat.
Bisping suffered a detached retina after his 2013 knockout loss to Vitor Belfort.
The loss sparked controversy as Belfort was granted a therapeutic exemption to use testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for the fight. The Nevada State Athletic Commission would ban TRT the following year.
Bisping went on to undergo several eye surgeries, detach the same retina again and sneak past UFC pre-fight medicals to fight again.
He won the UFC middleweight championship in 2016 and retired two years later after consecutive stoppage losses to Georges St-Pierre and Kelvin Gastelum.
And he wrote on Twitter about his prosthetic eye covering: “Crazy cos for years I was so self conscious about this and it really affected my confidence.
“In a big way, now I really don’t care, I guess that’s cos of the lens probably but still. Most things in life you learn to live with or stop caring eventually. My lesson for the day.”
Bisping explained how insecure he felt wearing the fake eyeball whilst appearing on TV as an analyst.
“The lens was hand painted by a company which is like 15 minutes from my house believe it or not. I went years driving up to Pomona, which is about an hour’s drive,” he said whilst answering questions on YouTube.
“I would get these little lenses that you put in that had a fake eyeball on them. Like a fake pupil and stuff, it would try and balance it out. It looked f******* awful, it looked terrible.
Bisping then said he was tired of being self conscious with his prosthetic eyeball and asked his doctor to have a glass eye fitted instead.
The doctors refused but instead fitted him with the prosthetic lens that he wears today.
“Then I went to a doctor because I was sick of looking like this, I was very self conscious believe it or not. Everytime I was working on TV and film, I’m doing stuff for the UFC and Fox Sports,” he added.
“I would go for auditions for acting parts and I was so self conscious. Of course people don’t want someone with a f***** up eye that looks like this, unless the script calls for someone with a messed up eye.”
Since retiring from fighting, Bisping works as an analyst for the UFC and BT Sport.
The UFC Hall of Famer was linked to a fight with Jake Paul earlier this year, but the internet star went to fight and knockout Ben Askren.
The Brit told Mirror Fighting in August that Paul’s team withdrew from talks after Bisping told them to double their initial offer.
