Jake Paul’s back-up plan confirmed for Tommy Fury fight

UFC legend Chael Sonnen has questioned Jake Paul’s justification for fighting Tommy Fury next despite backing him to be a huge boxing star.

The YouTube star looks set to take on his British rival Fury next with a venue and date reportedly confirmed for December 18 in Miami.

Paul will be looking to add another professional victory to his resume that already includes former UFC fighters Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley.

But Sonnen has questioned Paul’s motives for pursuing his latest Fury test, but has backed him to continue his rise to stardom in the sport.

“Why is he fighting Fury?” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. “Is it because of his family name?

“Is it because Jake believes there will be credibility added to fighting a full-time boxer who is an appropriate age and record?

“Who, by the way, is going to have a hype man who is known as boxing’s biggest star in Tyson Fury, and I believe I am pretty close with how we have got to this point.

“We are still tuning in to cheer against him, we are still resisting the idea to see if this funny guy from YouTube can be a bad***.

“Whether you believe it or not he is, he checks a tonne of boxes and he is also a star. It is not just a famous guy who has gone to box, that would be a lazy observation.”

Paul looked as if he may miss out on a test against Fury after his £1million public offer was rejected by the former Love Island star.

Talks remained ongoing with Paul accused of being “greedy” by Fury’s father John as the feud rumbled on.

But shortly after dismissing the offer Fury’s promoter Frank Warren revealed negotiations were “very close” to completion after a breakthrough.

And sources now indicate that the fight will take place the week before Christmas with Amanda Serrano expected to feature on the undercard.

The 24-year-old himself previously explained his desire to face Fury, matching with Sonnen’s claim that his credentials could be proven by fighting a “real” boxer.

He told the ‘Full Send’ podcast: “I think Tommy Fury is at the top of that list. He’s skilled, he’s undefeated, and he’s a real boxer.

“He has like 4million followers on Instagram which is good engagement. He has the fans from his relationship show [Love Island].

“It all starts with the numbers, like would the fight sell a lot? Would people actually care? I could go and fight the infamous jiujitsu guy who doesn’t shut the f*** up on social media, but it’s a hard sell.

“So after each fight, we go back to the drawing board and we’re like ‘who makes the most sense’ — can they actually sell pay-per-views? Can we sell this fight as like ‘this is a tough fight for Jake’.”

Paul appeared to dismiss any chance of Woodley securing a rematch before a fight with Fury, making a video to confirm his “I love Jake Paul” tattoo did not meet the criteria of their pre-fight wager.
