UFC star Chris Weidman snaps his leg throwing kick after 17 seconds of fight

Former UFC champion Chris Weidman suffered a horrific leg injury after just 17 seconds of his fight against Uriah Hall last night.

Middleweight Weidman snapped his right leg when Hall checked the very first shot of the main-card bout at UFC 261

Weidman immediately crumpled to the canvas in agony and was then taken out of the cage on a stretcher.

The injury was hauntingly reminiscent of one suffered by legend Anderson Silva when he took on Weidman in 2013.

“I’ve got nothing but respect for Chris Weidman,” Hall said. “He’s truly one of the best. It is a crazy story that he was the first man I fought that defeated me, that introduced me to fear.

“I wanted to put on a great performance. I feel so bad for him. I hope he’s OK. I wish the family well. It’s the sucky part of this sport. … I hope he recovers.”

Weidman was taken to hospital where he will have surgery on Sunday.

Later on the card, Kamaru Usman knocked out Jorge Masvidal in the second round of their rematch to retain his welterweight title.

Having edged the opening session, the champion dropped Masvidal with a stunning right hand which knocked the challenger out cold.

Usman landed several unanswered blows on the canvas before referee Herb Dean stepped in.

Valentina Shevchenko dominated Jessica Andrade to retain her flyweight title with a second-round stoppage.

“I like to surprise people,” the champion said. “They don’t expect this from me, but here I am. I can do everything.

“Opponents trying to figure out a weakness of mine? Don’t waste your time. There is none.”

Rose Namajunas won back the strawweight title she had lost to Andrade when he KO’d Weili Zhang in the first round with a stunning kick to the head.
