Varane tipped to be next Dias as Man Utd announce deal with Real Madrid

Incoming Manchester United signing Raphael Varane has been tipped to have the same impact on the Red Devils that Ruben Dias had with Manchester City.

United announced they have agreed a deal in principle with Real Madrid for Varane on Tuesday evening after a summer-long pursuit of the Frenchman.

The 28-year-old is viewed as one of the top defenders in Europe, having won four Champions League, three La Liga titles and the World Cup in the past decade.

He will come in as the partner for Harry Maguire in the heart of United’s defence as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aims to mount a Premier League title challenge this season.

United are the latest title-contending team to boost their defence through the transfer market, following on from Liverpool ’s move for Van Dijk and Dias’ arrival at City.

The latter enjoyed a stunning debut season at the Etihad Stadium following a £60million move from Portuguese giants Benfica.

He started 32 games as City romped to their third title in four years, helping Pep Guardiola’s men to secure the division’s best defensive record.

The 24-year-old won a plethora of awards after City’s title win, including the club’s Player of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Year.

He also became the first defender to win the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year since 1989 to cap an impressive debut campaign in England.

And former Arsenal hero Ray Parlour believes that Varane can follow in Dias’ footsteps and bring a similar impact to Old Trafford.

“Man City were so good defensively last year. That’s what they really improved on,” he told talkSPORT.

“Ruben Dias came in and you never really know what sort of situation you’re going to have with a player whether he settles or not.

“But he settled so well in the Premier League and John Stones got better alongside him.

“So if Varane can be very similar to how Ruben Dias settled in to the Premier League then they’ve got a fantastic defence.”

Parlour, who himself won three Premier League titles with the Gunners, also believes that Varane’s experience will be crucial to the Red Devils this year.

“If they can get someone of his experience, 79 caps for France, he’s been there and done it. He’s played in big, big games. He’s a World Cup winner. It’s an excellent signing,” Parlour said.

“That was the big improvement for Man City last year, how John Stones and Ruben Dias really played well together. They had a really good understanding.

“If Manchester United can get that right as well because Harry Maguire doesn’t miss many games, he had the injury towards the end of last season, but he played every single game before that.

“So if you can put him and Varane together, I’m sure they’d be working on a good partnership. It certainly gives Manchester United a massive upgrade from what they’ve had there before.”
