Manchester United are looking to address their weakness in central midfield and defence after solving their forward-line frailties by completing the £73million transfer of Jadon Sancho
Manchester United have already addressed their shortcomings in attack with the marquee £73million signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, pending a medical.
Old Trafford chiefs now turn their attention to the other problem areas in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, namely central midfield, centre-half and right-back.
Raphael Varane has been the club’s priority target to bolster the heart of defence for some time and recent reports suggested the Red Devils were making excellent progress towards signing the Real Madrid star.
The latest claims from Spain are less certain, however, while there is also a somewhat mixed update on the midfielder of the moment, Eduardo Camavinga.
There’s more on that and a potential Old Trafford exit in Thursday’s Manchester United transfer round-up.
Chelsea join Camavinga chase
Manchester United are facing yet another rival to sign Rennes wonderkid Eduardo Camavinga, this time from the Premier League, according to reports in France.
Camavinga, 18, is believed to have been sounded out as the Red Devils’ priority midfield target as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to strengthen in the centre of the park.
But Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are also pursuing the France international, while a fresh suitor has joined the race.
That club is Chelsea, with Le Parisien claiming the Blues have made direct contact with Rennes as they weigh up an offer for Camavinga.
The report adds Real Madrid are keeping close tabs and that United are still likely to table a bid as competition for the Ligue 1 starlet grows.
Varane transfer doubts surface
While Manchester United are still aiming to sign Raphael Varane, recent reports suggesting the deal is on the brink of completion are premature.
That’s according to Diario AS , which claims the Red Devils are drawing up a list of alternatives amid their doubts over signing the Real Madrid centre-back.
Varane, 28, has less than 12 months remaining on his contract with Los Blancos, who are unwilling to let the World Cup winner depart for a bargain price.
The report claims United have identified Sevilla stalwart Jules Kounde as an alternative, while Villarreal’s Pau Torres is also in the frame.
Further reports from Spain claim Sevilla are demanding £70million for Kounde, while Tottenham are also monitoring the France international.
Williams set for Saints switch
Brandon Williams is set to join Southampton on a season-long loan as he looks to satisfy his desire for first-team football, according to the Daily Mail .
Williams, 20, slipped down the pecking order last campaign following the arrival of Alex Telles, and managed just four appearances in the Premier League.
With first-choice Luke Shaw going from strength to strength for club and country, competition for minutes at left-back is set to be more fierce than ever at Old Trafford in the 2021/22 season.
Southampton are recruiting for a new option on the left of defence following the departure of Ryan Bertrand, who has joined Leicester City on a free transfer.
United, meanwhile, are said to be searching for a full-back who can provide cover for Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right of defence.
