Varane’s Man Utd transfer edges closer as Real Madrid swap deal discussed

Manchester United are continuing to look for ways to challenge for the Premier League title after a hugely improved season last time out.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under no illusion as to how important the summer transfer window is, having made some huge additions to his squad during his time in charge.

The Norwegian is now in his third summer as boss and knows the pressure is on after finishing second to local rivals Manchester City last season and going without a trophy once again.

With a deal already agreed for long-time target Jadon Sancho, numerous names have been frequently cropping up and in the frame for who comes in next.

Due to protests towards the end of last term, the Glazer family and outgoing executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward know they need to deliver some big signings this summer to keep fans happy.

Mirror Football brings you Tuesday’s latest transfer news from Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane is in line for a big-money move to Man Utd

Varane move edges closer

United are close to agreeing personal terms with Raphael Varane ahead of his impending switch from Real Madrid, according to our colleagues at the Manchester Evening News.

The French defender, 28, is closing in on a move to Old Trafford after 10 years at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he has won four Champions League titles and three La Liga crowns.

The MEN report that an agreement on personal terms is “not far off” ahead of a summer move, with Varane seemingly having his heart set on a new challenge.

Varane is currently on holiday with his family after playing for France at the Euros, but is said to be relaxed ahead of what he hopes will be a successful conclusion to one of the summer’s transfer sagas.

United are hopeful of paying around £50million for the defender’s signature, with the deal following up the £73million move they made for Jadon Sancho earlier this month.

Real Madrid swap deal discussed

In an attempt to lower that asking price from Real, United are reportedly willing to include Donny van de Beek or Paul Pogba in a potential swap deal.

According to The Transfer Window podcast (via the Daily Express ), both players are keen on moving to the Berabeu.

Pogba has made no secret of that fact before, while Real were keen on Van de Beek before he joined United from Ajax last summer.

The Dutchman has failed to settle at Old Trafford though, and has been tipped for an immediate exit this summer, while talk of Pogba’s future has been far quieter than usual after he found some good form last term.

Lingard set for permanent departure

Jesse Lingard could leave United for West Ham permanently this summer, though it is thought it will take a bid of around £30m to get him to leave Old Trafford.

Lingard shone during his half-season loan stint in east London, scoring nine goals in 16 Premier League appearances and firing them to Europa League qualification.

The Hammers are said to be desperate to make him a regular in their side too, suggesting they will pay United’s hefty asking price.

“We will do whatever it takes to sign him,” a senior West Ham source told Sky Sports. “He’s been outstanding for us.”
