It’s been a wonderful week for Liverpool.

Given the longstanding concern over how the team would fare without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane this month, manager Jurgen Klopp will be delighted with how his team has excelled in two tough away games.

The victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup put a Wembley date in the diary, while Sunday’s hard-fought win over Crystal Palace enhanced the Reds’ slender hopes of catching Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.

Here are your latest Liverpool headlines, which include a lot of focus on the controversial penalty awarded to the Reds on Sunday.

Vieira angry at penalty call

Palace boss Vieira pulled no punches in his assessment of the officiating against Liverpool.

The Eagles were pushing for an equaliser when Diogo Jota tumbled in the box after what appeared to be an innocuous clash with the goalkeeper.

However, the VAR encouraged referee Kevin Friend to look at the incident on the pitch-side monitor and eventually the penalty was awarded.

Afterwards, Vieira suggested it was a decision only some teams would get in the Premier League.

“Jota was really smart and the referee was really naive – or the VAR was really naive. There was no way that Jota could get the ball to score because of where he was,” he said. “It happens too often at home, especially when we play these big teams.”

Klopp indebted to “world-class” Alisson

After breezing into a two-goal lead at Selhurst Park, few would have anticipated Liverpool’s man of the match being goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

But as Crystal Palace piled on the pressure in the second half in search of an unlikely comeback, the Brazil international needed to be at his best.

After the game, Klopp said he was thankful to Alisson for his efforts and shared the details of a post-match conversation between the pair.

“I said to him now, thank you for saving our backside again,” revealed Klopp. “He said ‘that’s my job’. Of course it is very helpful to have a world-class goalkeeper at the back!”

Pundits baffled by penalty decision

As it became increasingly clear that a penalty would be awarded at Selhurst Park, a number of pundits and former players shared their surprise on social media.

Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, wrote on Twitter: “Joke decision VAR. Never a pen.” He added “Meant to be two experienced refs making that decision. It’s never ever a pen.”

Former England striker Gary Lineker was also bemused by the decision.

“That Is Not A Penalty. Never in a million years,” he said, before following up with “that is a genuinely appalling decision” in another post.
