Wan-Bissaka tipped to start for England at Euros despite Southgate snub

Aaron Wan-Bissaka must start for England at this summer’s European Championship, according to Watford captain Troy Deeney.

Gareth Southgate has a plethora of options at right-back, with Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, Chelsea’s Reece James and Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier in the squad for the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.

The Three Lions boss decided to leave Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold out of his recent selections in a move which has raised eyebrows.

There was no room for Wan-Bissaka either and the 23-year-old is still waiting for his senior England debut after injury curtailed a previous call-up.

But Deeney insists Southgate made an error snubbing the Manchester United star, claiming he should be England’s first-choice right-back at the Euros.

“It’s not personal, just an opinion; I don’t think Reece James goes over Wan-Bissaka,” the Hornets ace told talkSPORT .

“I don’t think he should have been in this squad over Wan-Bissaka. He doesn’t always start for Chelsea, that’s a main (reason). But I just think Wan-Bissaka is so good defensively.

“You can say what you want about (Wan-Bissaka) with the ball, but when it comes to the nitty-gritty you’re going to need someone who will clamp down on their winger, know his role, do his job, get the ball and give it to the better players – that’s what you need in those situations.

Who should be first-choice right-back for England at the Euros? Have your say in the comments.

“I’d back (Wan-Bissaka) or Kyle Walker because he’s so fast. But I’d have Wan-Bissaka.”

While Deeney has no doubt Wan-Bissaka should start at right-back if England were to take on the world champions, he acknowledged Southgate faces “really tough” selection dilemmas.

He added: “For me, Wan-Bissaka has to be in there in the squad. He didn’t make it. Trent Alexander-Arnold didn’t make it.

“I just think if you’re playing up against France and you want someone to take on one of their wingers, Wan-Bissaka is the man.

“He’s the best defender we have at the right-back option. It’s a real tough one because you could make arguments for everyone to be starting.”
