Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has taken a sarcastic swipe at Roy Keane over the Irishman’s comments about Jordan Henderson ahead of Euro 2020.

Henderson was carrying an injury going into the tournament which would significantly reduce his game time.

The midfielder missed 12 of the Reds’ final 13 Premier League matches with the groin problem and was only fit enough to sit on the bench on the last day of the campaign.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate still opted to include the 31-year-old in his squad, with Henderson going on to appear in five of England’s seven games on their way to the final.

There had been serious questions over Henderson’s readiness to play, with his only appearance since suffering the groin injury being a 45-minute cameo against Romania in the final friendly.

After it was announced that Henderson would not be starting at the Riverside Stadium, Keane took the opportunity to blast Southgate’s decision to take him to the Euros.

“He’s an experienced player, but to not kick a ball for three-and-a-half months and go to a European Championship… he can’t be right,” Keane told ITV Sport.

“I’ve heard lots of people say they want him around the place? For what? Does he do card tricks? Does he have a sing-song? Do quizzes in the evenings? What does he do?

“And if you’re Liverpool then you wouldn’t be happy either. Surely Jordan doesn’t want to be around the place if he’s some sort of cheerleader, you want to play, and clearly he’s nowhere near it.”

Henderson made his return to Liverpool action on Monday, coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 win over Osasuna for the final 20 minutes.

Following the game, Warnock took a swipe at Keane, instead hailing Henderson’s role as the Three Lions reached their first final of a major tournament since 1966.

“Card tricks apparently. That’s Roy Keane’s comment wasn’t it. He said why’s he there unless he can do card tricks,” he told LFCTV when asked about Henderson’s England role.

“But it’s not about that with him. He’s a leader, a natural guy who wants the team to succeed. He understands the role that he has to play there.

“I look at the semi-final and final he [Southgate] played him, because of his ability on the pitch to help people through games. He’s hugely influential.”

It was the Reds’ final friendly of pre-season ahead of their opening Premier League match against Norwich City, with Henderson mainly playing alongside the youngest members of Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

And Warnock praised the midfielder for his role in helping those youngsters to adapt to playing for the first-team.

“You know what you’re going to get from him,” Warnock said.

“You know he’s going to be those type of players, understands what it feels like to be a youngster coming into the squad and trying to prove what you can do.

“You do need those senior players to put their arm round you, give you the confidence to go out and showcase what you can do.

“I thought the young boys acquitted themselves well learning from the likes of Jordan when he comes on and how he behaves round the training ground, they’ll learn so much.”
