Wayne Rooney back in Derby dug-out after photos with women in hotel room emerge

Wayne Rooney will return to the Derby dugout tonight after his latest controversy.

The Rams boss is preparing to welcome Real Betis for a friendly.

He remains in charge despite being pictured asleep at the weekend in a hotel chair with various women posing beside him.

The photos were widely shared on social media.

But police yesterday dropped their investigation after deciding no offence had been committed.

Rooney is preparing for the start of the new Championship season at home to Huddersfield on August 7.

Derby face Spanish side Betis who finished 2020/21 in sixth in La Liga and are coached by Manuel Pellegrini.

It is Derby’s third public pre-season friendly after defeats to Manchester United and Salford.

Rooney, 35, assessed: “It is a chance for us to work on our fitness again and push ourselves a bit further towards the first game of the season.

“We know they are good with possession and are a strong team to play against.

“We see it as a challenge for us.”

Derby’s final pre-season friendly will see them then head to National League side Notts County on Sunday.

Derby are relying on several out of contract free agents as they have only nine senior players registered less than two weeks before the start of the new season.

It comes as Derby continue to negotiate for a relaxation to their EFL transfer embargo after a protracted row over their accounts.

In the meantime Rooney has been joining in with training to make up the numbers but was responsible for the ankle injury which has ruled midfielder Jason Knight out for up to three months.
