Wayne Rooney donates £30,000 to fund Childline on Christmas Day

Wayne Rooney has donated £30,000 to fund Childline on Christmas Day.

Former England captain Rooney’s Foundation has given £75,000 in total to the helpline, with a large chunk helping to pay for its daily running costs on December 25.

Rooney, currently caretaker boss of Derby, said: “It’s very upsetting to know that there are children out there who are really suffering and might be dreading Christmas.

“The pandemic has had a devastating impact on many young lives, and it’s so important that Childline is there for young people when they need it most.

“I’m backing the NSPCC’s Here for Children Christmas appeal as the pandemic has shown that we need the NSPCC and Childline now, more than ever, to be there for children and give them somewhere to turn.”

Childline carried out 140,000 counselling sessions for children in fear of abuse and with nowhere to turn from April to the end of October.

The NSPCC is warning that Christmas can be one of the worst times of the year and could be even worse this year because of the pandemic.
