Wenger slams Mourinho’s “permanent provocation” after jibe over book snub

Arsene Wenger has hit back at Jose Mourinho after his former rival took aim at his snub from the former Arsenal manager’s new book.

Wenger’s autobiography features no mention of Mourinho, despite their famous rivalry when the Portuguese manager was in charge of London rivals Chelsea.

Speaking about not being included last week, the Tottenham manager claimed Wenger would not want to include him due to the fact he regularly got the better of his Arsenal side.

“You are not going to do a chapter about 12 or 14 matches and never win one so why should he speak about me in his book?” Mourinho said.

“A book is a thing to make you happy, to make you proud so I understand perfectly the situation.”

Yet Wenger has responded to those comments and insisted he is not bothered by the comments.

Instead, he bit back by stating he feels like he is “in kindergarten” with his former rival and pointing out the inaccuracy of his comments having twice beaten Mourinho’s sides.

“It doesn’t bother me,” he told Canal+.

“It is permanent provocation. I feel like I’m in kindergarten with him. But, that’s part of his personality.

“It’s wrong, we beat him twice. We won, and there were also a lot of draws. And it is not ‘you’ who wins, you only participate in the victory. It is ‘us’ who win. The manager is there to get the most out of a team.”

Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho had a fierce rivalry

Wenger’s response comes after a frustrating weekend for Mourinho after his Spurs side threw away a three-goal lead late on against West Ham.

After the 3-3 draw, he said: “I think you can imagine how frustrated I am. It was exactly when we were in control that we conceded the first and their belief went up.

“My guys were not strong enough to cope with it psychologically.

“The last few seconds we lost two points. This is a game that was in the pocket and we lost two points.

“It’s difficult to say complacency. To be critical at that level. A team that scores three goals like we did cannot lose like we did.

“They were lucky but maybe they deserved that luck. We were unlucky but maybe we deserved that.

“Harry Kane hit the post. Bale can score the fourth and kill it. Based on free-kicks and second balls, they found a style. We should be stronger.”
