Manchester United could only draw 1-1 at struggling West Brom, leaving them second in the Premier League but seven points adrift of Man City.
West Brom, who need a remarkable turnaround to avoid relegation, stunned their visitors with a second-minute goal from on-loan striker Mbaye Diagne who beat defender Victor Lindelof to head home.
United looked out-of-sorts for the rest of the half, but their inspirational midfielder Bruno Fernandes stepped up yet again in the 44th minute with a spectacular volley from near the penalty spot.
In an exciting second half, United had a penalty overtuned by VAR after captain Harry Maguire – trying to driving the team forward – went down in the box.
West Brom survived waves of attacks including a Maguire header which hit the post in the last minute, but the hosts also caused scares on the break, Diagne twice going close with only David de Gea to beat.
Solskjaer: United ‘not giving away title early’
Asked if United were still in the title race, boss Solskjaer told Sky Sports: “It was a compliment that we got ourselves in the position we are in and we are not going to let them (Manchester City) run away with it.
“We play them soon and we are not giving it away early, no we are not.”
After dropping more points at the Hawthorns, Solskjaer said: “It is one of those days where we just weren’t where we should have been.
“Of course we should play better, but we gave ourselves a tough start. You’ve got 90-odd minutes to make amends so there was no need to panic, but we built our momentum up too lat and they still had moments where we could have lost the game.”
Maguire still believes United can win title
Asked if United were still in the title race, the central defender said: “Of course, but we need to go again and win the next one and the next one and the next one.
“Man City have created a gap for themselves, but we need to fight in each game. A draw is not a good result for us and it is disappointing.
“We created a lot of chances, enough to win the game. We made it tough for ourselves conceding the early goal. We huffed and puffed to get back into it and it’s a great save by Sam (Johnstone) in the end.
“We can do more and we can improve and it is disappointing. On another day we score two or three goals.”
Maguire: I was certain it was a penalty
United captain Maguire told Sky Sports after the game: “I was certain it was a penalty, I don’t understand why he (the referee) has even gone to the monitor. I felt a tug on my shoulder, it was slight, but there was also a clip on my heels and I was confident it was going to be given as a penalty.
“But it seems decisions are going against us at the minute, although we can’t rely on VAR decision, we’ve got to do more in the game.”
