David Moyes did not address the issue in his press conference ahead of Friday’s visit to Leeds United, but the decision – made for the best of Masuaku’s career, he says – will come as a blow with the 27-year-old having been in fine form since being brought back into the side by the West Ham boss.
Masuaku has put no timescale on his return.
In a post on Instagram, which was quickly deleted, the DR Congo international wrote: “Today I’m having a knee surgery to help me remove the pain that’s been bothering me for nearly 2 years now.
“It’s been a very difficult decision to make but for my good being and the rest of my career I have to take it.
“I’ll be giving updates here through my recovery and will see you soon again on the field. I wish my teammates/brothers the very best.”
Moyes may be forced to move away from the back-three system which has served him and his side so well this season given Masuaku’s absence.
