West Ham’s Lanzini sorry for ‘bad mistake’ after Christmas party photo

est Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini has apologised after attending a party over the Christmas period in breach of Covid-19 guidelines.

“I want to apologise for a bad mistake I made over Christmas and I take full responsibility for my actions,” Lanzini said on Twitter.

“I know people have made difficult sacrifices to stay safe and I should be setting a better example.”

Lanzini has featured in all of West Ham’s matches over the festive period, coming on as a substitute in games against Brighton on December 27 and Everton on New Year’s Day while starting in the goalless draw at Southampton on December 29.

Addressing the incident earlier on Saturday, West Ham expressed their disappointment with Lanzini and stressed that he had been reminded of his responsibilites.

“The Club has set the highest possible standards with its protocols and measures relating to COVID-19 so we are disappointed to learn of Manuel Lanzini’s actions,” a Hammers spokesperson said.

“The matter has been dealt with internally and Manuel has been strongly reminded of his responsibilities.”

Standard Sport understands that Lanzini has returned a negative Covid-19 test since the photo in question was taken.
