Boxing: Canelo celebrates victory over Saunders

Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant will end their war of words when they fight to decide who will be the first-ever undisputed super-middleweight champion.

Boxing’s pound-for-pound No.1 Alvarez is unbeaten in eight years and has stopped four of his last six opponents.

Plant faces a big step up in competition against the Mexican having been relatively untested since winning his IBF title in 2019.

The two men faced off for the first time when they met at a Los Angeles press conference last month, with Alvarez shoving Plant and both men briefly trading blows.

Alvarez accused Plant of calling him a “mother******” and was irate with the American after their scuffle.

Here’s all you need to know about their super-middleweight world title fight…

Alvarez: “It’s very different from normal and it’s definitely the most animosity I’ve had with an opponent heading into a big fight.

“I’m sticking with my prediction of a knockout before round eight.

“The first couple of rounds will be difficult, but as the fight progresses, I am going to be able to get him out of there.

“I’m just going to prepare to face him in the ring. I’ve never been involved in anything like what happened at the first press conference between me and Caleb.

Plant: “He’s been around for a long time and he’s accomplished a lot, but within his first 30 fights I was probably fighting better competition than he was in the amateurs.

“I’m a Golden Gloves national champion, I’m an Olympic alternate.

“I know he’s got experience on me, but everybody that I’ve ever fought had more fights than me.

“So, he’s a good fighter, but there’s no way that he’s better than me, and I truly believe that in my heart.”
